To everyone's dismay, an older widower falls in love with his young secretary in this unlikely romance.©1957 Paddy Chayefsky (P)2002 L.A. Theatre Works Drama & Plays Entertainment & Performing Arts Theater World Literature Entertainment United States

Editorial reviews

Elliot Gould and Christina Haag portray an unlikely but convincing couple whose May-December romance is frowned upon by most of the people around them. As widower Jerry Kingsley, Gould has a worn-in charm that belies his loneliness, and listeners will find themselves rooting for his happiness. Haag, as Kingsley's receptionist and eventual object of affection, is tremulous and frightened of finding happiness, wavering between Kingsley and her abusive husband, George. They are strongly supported by a cast of actors who manage to find the humanity in their characters, keeping them from lapsing into shrewish stereotypes. Listeners will find this a powerful and touching dramatization worthy of repeated listens.
