After more than 20 years in exile, Mallon de Wolfe - formidable, handsome, and with a shard of ice where his heart should be - is returning to Dartmoor. A place vast, barren, and perilous. A place where secrets refuse to remain buried.

Haunted by scandal and the shame of her bloodline, the newly widowed Countess Rosseline is determined to secure her status through marriage, even if it means resorting to deceit and entrapment.

Lord Wulverton has vowed to conquer the betrayals of his youth but the appearance of the mysterious countess threatens all he holds dear.

Can either escape the poisonous dominion of their past?

So much hotter and more romantic than Jane Eyre

Master of the Moor is the perfect romance. The plot has the ancient legends of the haunted moors and the return of the equally haunted master Viscount Mallon de Wolfe. After his adulterous mother left the family she met her death on the dangerous moors where ghosts and wild hounds are said to wander. Rosseline comes to the de Wolfe estate at the same time that he returns to try to seduce Mallon's young nephew so that she can retain the status of her late husband's title and French estate. But Rosseline is a passionate and experienced widow and she is drawn to Mallon instead like a moth to a flame. I love that Rosseline is a strong, intelligent and independent woman who, in 1909, knows what a woman must do to retain wealth and power. She must marry well. The book is Gothic, atmospheric and takes the reader deeper than Jane Eyre. And the chemistry between Rosseline and Mallon is combustible and so very hot. I read the book twice on Kindle but wanted to hear the Audible version and the narration is perfect too. Set at Christmas, the story has the local traditions and the winter mystique and gloom that only the moors can offer.

Compelling in every way

This author is rapidly becoming my go to source when I crave historical romance. Her writing and choosing of words are time fitting. The stories flow and her characters perfect in all their imperfections. They seem like real people.

These books truly transport the listener/reader back in time and it’s so wonderful to be able to relax and forget about life and obligations for a while.

Since this is an audiobook, a few words about Elspeth Cyprian. While she won’t become my favorite (female) voice, her voice and accent are wonderful for this story. Well done!

Another good story from this author

Richly layered story, and well-established setting as typical from this author. A few places lagged a bit under the details, but overall an engaging story with steamy scenes.

4.5 Gothic, Passion , Superstition, Suspense, Sex

It's all here! This is a Gothic historical romance about a new Viscount that is going to resume his life and claim his title in the Moors after a 23 year absence. He meets a young lady on his journey. They not only share their cabin they share their bed. They end up crossing paths once again by arriving at the same home. Genevieve and Mallon are intriguing and passionate. You won't be disappointed. So many secrets will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The book is very well written and will keep you engaged. I did have to restart because it's a little confusing at first.. The narrator does a great job capturing each character.

A Sizzling Romance on the Moors

A family tree would have helped me out at the beginning, but once you wrap your head around how all the characters relate to each other and Lord Wolverton (swoon) arrives, the story really takes off. Talk about some sizzling sexy scenes! There’s plenty of inner turmoil to overcome with these two romantic leads and a couple of small side plots to fill out the action. It’s a very entertaining R rated audible read. The narrator did a great job immersing you in the story.

Good Story, Good Narration

I enjoyed this story. Neither Mallon or Rosseline were looking for love or expecting happiness in their lives. Rosseline was only hoping for acceptance. Mallon to return to the land he loved and to right some wrongs. It was fun and engaging as we the reader knew they were perfect for each other but had to wait for them to discover this. I thought the narrator did a great job, did the different characters voices well and was easy to understand. I played it in the car as well. I'd reach my destination and stay in the car longer because I didn't want to switch it off.

a festive story with a gothic feel

Mallon de Wolfe left England as a soldier and has spent the last twenty years abroad. With the death of his cold-hearted father, Mallon is left with the title of Viscount Wolverton and is finally returning to Dartmoor to face the mistakes of his youth and right some of his father’s wrongs. Mistrustful of women after his mother’s abandonment and believing himself to be unfeeling, Mallon is alarmed by the attraction he feels for his sister-in-law’s relation by marriage, the widowed Countess Rosseline, a guest for the Christmas festivities.

Genevieve was left well off by a generous widow’s portion but her low birth means she’s still denied the acceptance she craves in French society. She hopes to secure another husband to gain respectability and marrying Hugo, Mallon’s heir, would serve the purpose nicely and also ensure she could remain at Chateau Rosseline, the only place that has ever felt like home to her. She has no issues working her wiles on young Hugo, but Mallon is determined to protect his inexperienced nephew. In so doing, Mallon and Genevieve struggle against their growing attraction for each other, but their past hurts may prove too much to overcome in securing a happy future.

Man did these two go through some back and forth. Mallon started out extremely bitter towards women, especially those he thought could potentially be unfaithful. He automatically assumed Genevieve would fall into this category and it took him some time to overcome his trust issues. For her part, Genevieve was also preoccupied with being accepted by society, thinking this would bring her happiness, and it took a bit for her to reevaluate her priorities and realize what she really needed, but when she did she was quick to set things right with Mallon. He took more time, but his grand romantic gestures were endearing and these two made a cute, if unlikely, couple. The gothic feel of the moor along with the Christmas setting gave this book a unique vibe, the story flowed well, and I enjoyed it.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Historical Romance

An intriguing and entertaining historical romance set at the turn of the 20th century. With a gothica feel and set in the West County moors, the author quite successfully captures the mood, atmosphere and romance of that period. Mallon is the estranged, absent Lord returning home, and Genevieve the recently widowed woman looking for security and love.

I really enjoyed this audiobook, it was an excellent story that had a good mix of drama, chemistry, misunderstandings and romance.

Mastering the Master!

I enjoyed this story very much as well as the way each of the characters' personalities and ideas on love and life kept on altering depending on what was happening.
I especially loved the way Countess Rosseline manipulates Mallon de Wolfe and others around her. She is just so good at it!
Mallon of course isn't an innocent and he comes across as a very caring personalty who is also a deliciously, sexy hunk.
I loved this story which has just the right amount of passion, darkness and mysteries to make it interesting and entertaining.
Elspeth Cyprian, the narrator did a good job with her narration and has some interesting 'voices' and accents which she uses very nicely.
I listened to the audiobook version and my unbiased review is given voluntarily.

A hot and passionate gothic novel

Master of the Moor brings together romance, love, passion, intrigue, mystery, a handsome and darkly charming gentleman, a high spirited and strong willed lady and all set to a gothic backdrop.

Lord Wulverton and Countess Rosseline's relationship is highly charged creating conflict and friction while they are both hiding from a difficult past. As always with Emmanuelle's books the sex fits in with the plot, it is never dominearing. It's hot and passionate but is balanced by a deep connection between characters.

The story has a strong plot and characters with a wonderfully traditional gothic feel, it it clear that a lot research goes on alongside the author's writing.

I bought this book, as I had already purchased the Audible version, and I must say that I enjoyed every word.
Lord Mallon de Wolfe was travelling back from abroad where he had served in the army and this was his first time home for 20 odd years. He caught a train to London . But the ticket he had bought to get him to London was not valid for the private carriage he had organised. Then he found that it had been given to another passenger. So he was really annoyed with the conductor, also with the woman passenger who had his carriage. As her maid had her own carriage just down the corridor. But the lady wouldn’t share with her servant as that was unheard of . So the Lord thought he might have to sleep in the corridor. The conductor left them and she signalled for him to sit down..He gratefully did. Then she had her way with him. When they awoke in the morning she found he had gone. The Lord was rushing home as his Father had died and he was left the ancestral home and the title of Viscount. Well the story goes on and on. The house is on the moor and it is very creepy. When he arrives home
He discovers that the lady from the train is a guest in his house. So after many trists and arguments, her
Fancy for his young nephew who was the heir of the Lord. Their relationship changed. I heard the story and have now read the book and I will probably read it again, as it is full of stories of their former lives and their families and mystery and romance, with fear and tragedy. and sorrow and excitement. This book is excellent and makes you feel as if you don’t want to put it down. I am very pleased to have heard it being read and to read it myself . It is very descriptive and very romantic book, and very exciting. I loved it. x

Love!

In Master of The Moor, Genevieve, a strong daring, independent woman finds her plans upended by a chance meeting which has her questioning herself. I enjoyed this historical romance, a genre I have neglected of late. Combining two strong leading characters works really well and I was easily carried along by the narrative. The narrator, Elspeth Cyprian, has a fabulous French accent, and tells the story well. 💖💖💖💖
