Publisher's Summary

Annev has avoided one fate. But a darker path may still claim him....

After surviving the destruction of Chaenbalu, new mysteries and greater threats await Annev and his friends in the capital city of Luqura. As they navigate the city’s perilous streets, Annev searches for a way to control his nascent magic and remove the cursed artifact now fused to his body.

But what might removing it cost him?

As Annev grapples with his magic, Fyn joins forces with old enemies and new allies, waging a secret war against Luqura’s corrupt guilds in the hopes of forging his own criminal empire. Deep in the Brakewood, Myjun is learning new skills of her own as apprentice to Oyru, the shadow assassin who attacked the village of Chaenbalu - but the power of revenge comes at a daunting price. And back in Chaenbalu itself, left for dead in the Academy’s ruins, Kenton seeks salvation in the only place he can: the power hoarded in the Vault of Damnation....

stomps on books 1

this book started with great momentum and then ramped up from there. i found myself rooting for all the pov charcters even tho they all had major charcter flaws. especially Anev, he is angry and downright villanius and i still want him to succed because his adversaries can be so much worse. the story is great and full of adventures but i wish it kept going because i was so invested in a the story lines.

A Tragic Tale Keeps You On The Edge of Suspense

At some point you want things to work out for the greater good. You think, “surely this much tragedy is not for nothing?” Personally I want to see the human struggle and then eventually the good rise above the evil. With “Master Artificer” we’re not there yet. That’s my only complaint. It’s not a book series I would pass along to a young person. There’s already enough tragedy in real life.
The author makes us care about these characters. For me, all of them. Somehow you feel pity for the people he’s created be they villains or heroes. Then they’re tragically ripped from the pages in gruesome death. It’s not an easy journey.
Yet, I can’t wait for the next installment. I binged this book and now I have to wait... again. Oh the tragedy!

Why, just Why

How do you end it like that? Now I have to eagerly wait for book 3! Watching Annev turn away from the light is heartbreaking. Beautifully written, hanging on every word! I can't wait to see where all these characters end up!

I just couldn’t finish it

You know, when you only have so much listening time in a day, you want it to be enjoyable. I returned this book after a few chapters because I found it tedious and because I don’t need entire chapters focusing on the raw evil of some of the characters. Some may have loved the detail, I found it stressful.

Spoiler - torture and repeated violence might be a trigger for some. I just didn’t want to hear it in this context.

Master of fantasy

I'm rounding up to a 5, cause the imagination and writing deserves it. For me though, it's more of a 4 to 4.5, due to my inability to keep up with all the info that this segment has tried to pack into my pea brain. Old gods, younger gods, (with all those crazy names and then there's their nicknames), a whole slew of abominations, members of damnation, witches, magic systems, artifacts that do all the special little goodies to get our characters out of trouble or in to trouble. I listened to the great Peter Kenny narrate again, which I totally loved (even with 29 hours), but did have to keep going back and re-listen at times. (Not a story you can multitask with, just too much going on.) So, I'll probably do a kindle read of it, before installment 3 comes out.
The story picks up where the first left off, in the ruins of Chaenbalu, where the few survivors band together leaving the only life they have known behind, unknowing that they are not all that survives.
As the journey progresses, the classmates branch out in different directions, with their lives taking on new meaning from their original goal of being Avatars.
Annev's POV isn't the only one concentrated on here. Myjun, Oyru, Kenton, Fyn, Titus and Theron all have interesting stories to tell, adding to the mystery of where this is all headed.
I won't go in to all that happens to these characters (that's what you need to find out for yourself), but I must say this is an extraordinary tale of magic and myth, that I'll reread and await the next installment.

Horrible narration

Narrator reads too quickly and the sound quality is poor. Tried slowing it down a touch, but that didn’t work well.

Loved it!

If the first book in the series established the core mythology and main character than the sequel’s priority is further developing secondary characters and world building. You learn so much more about the magic and the world and I loved every minute of it. Lots of influences are in this world and story; everything from Silmarillion to Star Wars but it’s definitely its own unique creation. We are witnessing something special. Will Annev become the Dark Lord that was prophesied in the opening lines of the first book? Stay tuned...

Imagination Gone Wild

The build up of the existing characters and the creation of new ones was fantastic. My imagination went wild as I listened to every detail. You can tell there is so much to this world than we even see in the books. There could be so many tangents but it was kept moving forward and coming together. Absolute must read!

Like Book 1 but with more worldbuilding

What doesn’t makes sense is fleshed out here, validating my reader thoughts about the setting.
Does the same as before, starting slow to pull you in and then finishing strong.

I guess my main issue with the series is viewing it as plot driven when it’s really character driven and how he chooses to follow his fate
