Publisher's summary

--WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER--

The Gospel of Mary Magdalene reveals a very different love story from the one we've come to refer to as Christianity. Harvard-trained theologian Meggan Watterson leads us verse by verse through Mary's gospel to illuminate the powerful teachings it contains.

A gospel, as ancient and authentic as any of the gospels that the Christian bible contains, was buried deep in the Egyptian desert after an edict was sent out in the 4th century to have all copies of it destroyed. Fortunately, some rebel monks were wise enough to refuse—and thanks to their disobedience and spiritual bravery, we have several manuscripts of the only gospel that was written in the name of a woman: The Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

Mary's gospel reveals a radical love that sits at the heart of the Christian story. Her gospel says that we are not sinful; we are not to feel ashamed or unworthy for being human. In fact, our purpose is to be fully human, to be a "true human being"—that is, a person who has remembered that, yes, we are a messy, limited ego, and we are also a limitless soul.

And all we need to do is to turn inward (again and again); to meditate, like Mary Magdalene, in the way her gospel directs us, so that we can see past the ego of our own little lives to what's more real, and lasting, and infinite, and already here, within.

With searing clarity, Watterson explains how and why Mary Magdalene came to be portrayed as the penitent prostitute and relates a more historically and theologically accurate depiction of who Mary was within the early Christ movement. And she shares how this discovery of Mary's gospel has allowed her to practice, and to experience, a love that never ends, a love that transforms everything.

MARY MAGDALENE, THE APOSTLE OF APOSTLES.

This is the third time I have listened to what I consider part of the Canonical Bible. Although pages are missing, they to, were victims of sinful church leaders. Jesus Christ first visited Mary for a reason after leaving His tomb. She was the purest of all, after He rid her of seven demons, and she also believed that He would rise again which His own disciples did not. She was never a prostitute, another untruth. Mary Magdalene was sanitized by powerful men, and thats what I chose to believe. I could go on forever, but Mary Magdalene was told facts that Jesus gave to her to tell His disciples, and she did that. Jesus did say she would be remembered after annointing His feet with scented oil, so do yourself a favor and become a more informed Christian by reading about this woman, along with the Gospel of Thomas. You will do yourself no harm.

LOVE MEGGAN

Meggan’s ability to tell a story is UNMATCHED. She has a real gift for writing and her words are impactful. This was life changing and made my experiences feel SO VALID especially after growing up in a religion where I had many questions. I got her divine feminine Oracle deck after reading this book and it’s absolutely fabulous. Can’t say enough about her work she is SO inspiring

Important, compelling, should be required reading!

Aware of a woman's negative place in the male oriented Christian church of today; afterall- everything is Eve's fault and women ARE seen as lesser- God is a He! Megan Watterson has always felt her womanhood had no place in Christianity. Deep thinking and spiritual as a child, she couldn't relate with the patriarchal church, but searched. Studied Buddhism, went to seminary school, then discovered the lost gospels, and now has written her beautiful journey towards finding the feminine half of Christ. Coming off a tad sophomoric at first, because well, she's young, still Megan's delight is contagious and her observations gorgeous as she finds Mary Magdelene wasn't a prostitute as 'they' would have us believe. Mary, rather, was the most beloved, female half of the Christ story. The half stuffed away in the 3rd century by the Council of Nicea when the final 'Bible as we know it" was put together from a larger group of gospels and Christian writings. She carefully takes us through the fascinating history, quoting from the Bible, the Books of Mary, Thomas, and Philip, the Buddha and more. She reveals her personal discovery that Mary's message is one of Adwaita, from the Sanskrit. Meaning, we are not separate, humans and God, we are one- true monotheism. Thinking we are separate is actually dualistic. Mary refers to God as "The Good". And we are already Good. We just need to realize our own capacity, to pick up our cross and follow Christ, not 'wait' for Him to 'save' us.
Important, uplifting, and highly recommended reading.
