Publisher's summary

A rugged and ruined naval officer comes to claim his bride in an unforgettable tale of love, revenge, and redemption from the nationally bestselling author of Marry in Scandal.

Lady Rose Rutherford - rebel, heiress, and exasperated target of the town's hungry bachelors - has a plan to gain the freedom she so desperately desires: She will enter into a marriage of convenience with the biggest prize on the London marriage mart.

There's just one problem: the fierce-looking man who crashes her wedding to the Duke of Everingham - Thomas Beresford, the young naval officer she fell in love with and secretly married when she was still a schoolgirl. Thought to have died four years ago he's returned, a cold, hard stranger with one driving purpose - revenge.

Embittered by betrayal and hungry for vengeance, Thomas will stop at nothing to reclaim his rightful place, even if that means using Rose - and her fortune - to do it. But Rose never did follow the rules, and as she takes matters into her own unpredictable hands, Thomas finds himself in an unexpected and infuriating predicament: He's falling in love with his wife....

Contains mature themes.

LOVELY STORY!

I loved it! I liked the way the backstory of the main male character was presented. I liked that the female main character shook her hang ups pretty fast. And I do love the Happily Ever Afters!

The narrator did a great job!

Recommended audiobook.

Unique storyline

I enjoyed this book the most so far in the series. The author’s humor came out more in this one. Plus the storyline wasn’t as typical. In addition, I very much appreciated that there were no hours-long misunderstandings that so many in this genre have as a writing ploy. The refreshing development of their relationship kept the plot interesting and moving forward.

Very enjoyable story!

I really enjoyed this latest addition to the Marriage of Convenience series. It may be my favorite of all. I enjoyed the story, the characters were well developed and kept me involved all the way through. The combination of Anne Gracie and Alison Larkin is magical! I wish Ms. Gracie’s older books would be recorded by Ms. Larkin! Are you listening Audible?

Marvelous Narrator

Marry in Secret continues this excellent series by Anne Gracie. The stories manage to be quite fresh versions of conventional tropes, with original characters and engaging writing.

Didn’t think the first book in the series could be topped, but this story is wonderful.

LOVED it!

no words...touching, heartbreaking and yet hopeful & romantic...Gracie envelops you in such a rich world that you can't help feel invested & curious about all her characters. The twist & turns keep you wondering & wanting more. Larkin is exceptional. period. Her narration is full of emotion that brings all these characters to life in a way that you feel their journey...you feel their triumphs & their sorrows...this story would not be the same without Larkin's exceptional storytelling.

like all 3rd children

Yhis book was a bit hard to get through, maybe because of how sad the storyline was. Overall a good story, but not a light as her previous books.

The Story was okay, but the narrator was terrible

Narrators make or break a book. That is why I was so surprised to see that this terrible narrator was (again!) chosen for this book, but I listened anyway. Now I am convinced that I won't listen to this particular narrator anymore. While she can speak somewhat in a man's voice, she is not consistent. I could not understand why she made such a snarl to the woman's husband's voice?! He sounded terrible throughout the book, but especially toward the end when he was "crying" all the time! When he was supposed to be crying, he sounded like a woman. And I did not like the way he did not trust his wife and tell he the complete truth at first. He ended up doing so and not at her prompting, so why not tell her right off the bat??
As far as the wife, why did she not recognize him when he first came into the church?? If you really love someone, you would remember their face, even if it has whiskers all over it! I did listen to this book, but I yelled at the book quite a bit! I didn't end up liking it at all.
