Publisher's Summary

Jennifer A. Nielsen, author of the New York Times and USA Todaybestselling Ascendance Trilogy, has woven an electrifying tale of greed and power, magic and destiny, and one boy's courage at the heart of it all. When Nic, a slave in the mines outside of Rome, is forced to enter a sealed cavern containing the lost treasures of Julius Caesar, he finds much more than gold and gemstones: He discovers an ancient bulla, an amulet that belonged to the great Caesar and is filled with a magic once reserved for the Gods - magic some Romans would kill for.

Now, with the deadly power of the bulla pulsing through his veins, Nic is determined to become free. But instead, he finds himself at the center of a ruthless conspiracy to overthrow the emperor and spark the Praetor War, a battle to destroy Rome from within. Traitors and spies lurk at every turn, each more desperate than the next to use Nic's newfound powers for their own dark purposes. In a quest to stop the rebellion, save Rome, and secure his own freedom, Nic must harness the magic within himself and defeat the empire's most powerful and savage leaders.

Great middle grade novel for boys and girls alike

The audio performance was pleasing to listen to. It wasn't over acted, or set to cheesy music or read in a boring voice. I really appreciated the reading.
The book/story itself was great. Entertaining, interesting and fresh. Nielsen did a great job setting the time and place and I loved it.

Not my favorite

It was an okay story, narration was good. It just wasn't for me. It ended on a but of a cliff hanger. I hate that personally.

Kids book

Didn't realize this was a book for adolescence. Performance was so bad sped it up to see if it would help, it didn't. Got to the last hour and twenty-five minutes, and couldn't listen anymore. Poor kids that end up selecting this.

if you didn't read it then don't look

this is my fourth book to reas by jennifer ( she's amazing btw) I felt like Nik here wasn't as much as sage in the false prince, although I kinda understood he's mind sit ( a slave without education or knowledge ) no wander he would be different, he had a kind heart but very weird way of thinking, I have been mad and disappointed by him many times,, but he's caracter had developed very nicely, in the end of the book I felt a lot of Love and respect toward him, so excited to read " listen " to the second one !, I'm not a book person.. but I think I'm starting to be !
