Before he was Mark Twain, he was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Fair and Original and Respectful

For a while it seemed to me that we were unfortunately going to be rehearsing hints and examples of racism, but as the story rolled along it got better and better. After all, a biography of Samuel Clemens should, when dust has settled, honor the man and his legacy. Well, Mr. Chernow chose the things he wanted to emphasize, some of which are uncomfortable, and with research new to me, and he tells it all in such a manner that the good definitely outweighs the bad, the humor remains as funny as it was in the first place, and Mark Twain is rightfully portrayed as a good and very special figure in our American consciousness, and in the world.

The best biography I wish I'd never touched

As usual, Chernow did his homework. If you want a very comprehensive account of Twain's life, this is for you. The narrator was excellent speaking in the third person and even in first person as Twain. However, his attempts at third person for other characters was a bit weak. The biggest problem with this was myself. I wanted Mark Twain to not be as much of a fool and ass as he apparently was. The truth hurts sometimes. He was a heck of a storyteller though.

Mark Twain was a humanitarian curmudgeon

Ron Chernow gives a thorough picture of Samuel Clemon’s literary legacy and private life. In the process, the the humorist comes across as a humanitarian curmudgeon. He held unforgiving bitterness toward any who crossed him, but adored his family and innocents.

5 stars – A Brilliant Listen from Start to Finish

I absolutely loved Ron Chernow’s Mark Twain. Chernow dives deep into Twain’s life with the same level of detail and insight he’s brought to his other biographies. It’s not just the facts—it’s the full, complex man behind the name, and I came away with a whole new appreciation for Twain’s genius and contradictions.

The narrator was fantastic. His voice and delivery brought Twain’s story to life without ever overdoing it. Felt like sitting down with someone who knew both Twain and the era inside and out.

Highly recommend—especially the audiobook

The dramatic, comic and historical life of our perhaps greatest writer brilliantly presented.

I enjoyed the listen thoroughly, particularly its variety of American and world travel. From poor shabby Mississippi River towns to London high society!
