When magic is up, electricity dies, cars stall, and skyscrapers tumble; when it's down, phones and guns work, and defensive spells can't protect your house from the creatures who stalk the streets. Equally dangerous are the competing factions of The Pack - a highly organized and military clan who governs Atlanta's were-bears, -wolves, and -hyenas - versus the Masters of the Dead, power and knowledge-hungry necromancers whose minds control hordes of blood-crazed vampires.

This is home to Kate Daniels, a mercenary who investigates when things get out of hand. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. But when her guardian is murdered, she must choose between doing nothing and staying safe, or pursuing the dangerous entity who killed him. Kate is way out of her league; but who ever said the right choice was easy?

First off, I absolutely LOVE the reader. she has such a variety of voices and they mesh well with each character, bringing them to life. you can picture each one as if you've met them with their unique personalities. Then the author.... not enough words can describe how I feel about them! this book has got me hooked and I'm eager to see how it plays out. On to the next one!

Ok... I'm hooked!

I've read the book several times and I have to say it's still one of my favorites. Being able to listed to the story and hear the narrators interpretation of the voices gives the story that much more life. There are a few times where the pronunciations for certain words don't match how I hear them in my head, but over all I can definitely see myself listening to this multiple times.

This is my second time through listening to the series, and it is just as incredible as the first!
If you have not read the series, you definitely need to give it a try! It is often a standard against which all other books in the genre are measured.

Love the series!

I love these books and the audible version is an Excellent diversion while working. Renee's voice has become Kate for me. I would love it even more if it was a team effort with a male counterpart. Even so they are very enjoyable. We will eventually purchase them all as my husband and myself love them for long car rides.

Thank you Renee Raudman

This is actually really good story overall and I am planning to go forward in the series but for some reason towards the end one plot point/shift common sense just takes a nose dive. After things are supposedly wraped up, she doesn't agree but no one believes her saying she's just a "glory hound". Then a severed head is left on her porch with a note and then they agree the killer is still out there but because they then prove it isn't the one guy that they suspect, she is back to being an "attention seeker" ....I'm sorry do they think a severed head just appeared out of nowhere??? And they basically bully her into turning on who THEY suspect is the killer to get a sample to test, then when they get there they say it was HER that suspected him, when she fought them on it being him and they forced her there???

Small spoiler alert below
