Miss Congeniality meets Steel Magnolias

Fun series with humor and charm. Fortune may be a sniper, but the tone is more Stephanie Plum than Jack Reacher. Each book provides a self-contained mystery, with a hint of future romance. The best thing about the series are the silver haired ladies of the Geritol Mafia.

It’s funny how the same author can produce winners and losers. I found the author’s Mudbug series to be overly silly, too romance focused, and filled with unrealistic characters whereas this series’ sass to serious ratio, between the comic parts and the mystery parts, really worked for me. Yes, it’s unrealistic for each of the first three books to feature murder mysteries set only one week apart and coincidentally involving Fortune, But, if you approach this with a Steel Magnolias meets Miss Congeniality sense of fun, you’ll enjoy these.

There’s occasional, mild profanity (a smatter of “b!tches” and a “piece of S”), gators and raccoons run amok, and jokes at the expense of religion, prohibition, and thick-headed men. Wait for the sales, but the first couple of books in this series are great for zippy matinee or beachy listens.

The narration added to an enjoyable story. I could totally see this as a fun movie.

This book was quite funny. The ending was unexpected if you didn't think too hard about it. I am definitely looking forward to the next one.
