The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. Amelia - 1942: The inside of my closet held the last bit of my freedom before I was torn from my home and shoved onto a dark train. Our destination was even darker. "Women and children to the right. Men to the left," they shouted at us. Everything was taken from me, leaving only the smoke-filled air, piercing screams, and soul-burning cries. I was slowly starved and weakened to the bone, but there was a man - a Nazi - who brought me extra food. He called himself a prisoner too, but he scared me, and I wondered if he was the enemy I should fear the most.

Who you want people to be makes you blind to who they really are. It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan — a Berkeley mom with an enviable life — went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. Her body was never found, just a shattered cellphone and a solitary hiking boot. Her husband and teenage daughter have been coping with Billie’s death the best they can: Jonathan drinks as he works on a loving memoir about his marriage; Olive grows remote, from both her father and her friends at the all-girls school she attends.

Publisher's summary
The million-copy best seller Lilac Girls introduced the real-life heroine Caroline Ferriday. Now, Lost Roses, set a generation earlier and also inspired by true events, features Caroline’s mother, Eliza, and follows three equally indomitable women from St. Petersburg to Paris under the shadow of World War I.
“A nuanced tale that speaks to the strength of women.” (Kirkus Reviews)
It is 1914, and the world has been on the brink of war so often, many New Yorkers treat the subject with only passing interest. Eliza Ferriday is thrilled to be traveling to St. Petersburg with Sofya Streshnayva, a cousin of the Romanovs. The two met years ago one summer in Paris and became close confidantes. Now, Eliza embarks on the trip of a lifetime, home with Sofya to see the splendors of Russia: the church with the interior covered in jeweled mosaics, the Rembrandts at the tsar’s Winter Palace, the famous ballet.
But when Austria declares war on Serbia and Russia’s imperial dynasty begins to fall, Eliza escapes back to America, while Sofya and her family flee to their country estate. In need of domestic help, they hire the local fortune-teller’s daughter, Varinka, unknowingly bringing intense danger into their household.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Eliza is doing her part to help the White Russian families find safety as they escape the revolution. But when Sofya’s letters suddenly stop coming, she fears the worst for her best friend.
From the turbulent streets of St. Petersburg and aristocratic countryside estates to the avenues of Paris where a society of fallen Russian émigrés live to the mansions of Long Island, the lives of Eliza, Sofya, and Varinka will intersect in profound ways. In her newest powerful tale told through female-driven perspectives, Martha Hall Kelly celebrates the unbreakable bonds of women’s friendship, especially during the darkest days of history.

Critic reviews
“A charming and vividly rendered historical novel.... Based on true events, this prequel to Lilac Girls transports.” (People)
“Inspired by true events, just like its predecessor, and just as well-researched, Lost Roses is a remarkable story and another testament to female strength. This sweeping epic will thrill and delight fans of Lilac Girls and readers of historical fiction alike.” (PopSugar)
“Epic...[Martha Hall] Kelly’s gift is bringing to life and to light the untold stories of women and families far away from the war front yet deeply affected by the decisions of leaders and the efforts of fighters. Fans of historical fiction...and viewers of period dramas will want to clear their calendars when Lost Roses comes out." (Booklist, starred review)

For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

In this luminous novel, Dominic Smith reinvents the life of one of photography's founding fathers. In 1839, Louis Daguerre's invention took the world by storm. A decade later, he is sinking deep into delusions brought on by exposure to mercury, the very agent that allowed his daguerreotype process. Believing the world will end within one year, he creates his "Doomsday List", 10 items he must photograph before the final day. It includes a woman he has always loved but has not seen in half a century.

Loved the story, hated the reader for Eliza
I kept up with this because the story was so intriguing, but I agree with others that the woman who read the Eliza character was just terrible, awful, grating, way too melodramatic -- I wanted to punch her, which was too bad because the character is actually a good one. I thought the Russian accents were so-so, but they were not nearly as annoying as Eliza's.

delightfully entertaining and historical!
I loved the historical references and the journey of these women. it totally captured me from the 1st chapter. I really never had read or listened to such detail of Russian life during world war 1. I thoroughly enjoyed it and now I'm off to listen to Caroline's story..I thought this was book one. lol Bravo, to the performances too, it really brought the book to life!! excellant

Fabulous read about 3 strong women
This author does her homework to prepare for the thrilling story of 3 strong women. The story is told in three parallel stories that intersect in the narrative. Very nicely done.

Interesting story
I learned about some Russian history that I did not know. The story lines were good. In the beginning it was a little confusing to follow the characters since they were constantly switching. I would have liked some more time with each one, then switching more often toward the end would have been fine. The narrators were good. I liked the different accents. That helped keep the characters straight. It seemed like there were some situations that were left hanging at the end that I would have liked to know more about. Overall a good book.

Pleasantly surprised.
Dipped into this book by accident, and became engrossed in the story. And then, in my ignorance, learned the factual aspects at the end. Now I want to dig in further. Thank you.
The actors did an excellent job at reading the story too.

Love the strong female characters
I’m a little obsessed with the women in the 3 books in the series. I read them out of order, but it really didn’t matter. To think about the values they passed on and the hardships they endured, despite having wealth, makes me wish more knew about them. The author did an excellent job of weaving the lives of each character together.

Outstanding
Martha Hall Kelly did not disappoint! The first few chapters I was nervous being introduced to so many characters and not finding a flow. I wasn’t sure it was a book I would like less alone love. Thank goodness I kept reading every chapter was better than the last. It was outstanding! Kelly has clearly established herself as one of the great writers of our generation!
