Reminiscent of Orpheus & Eurydice

I can't quite decide how I feel about this book. It's a sort of a backwoods-Americana-voodoo version of ancient mythological stories from Greece and Rome. It's laden with roadblocks for the persistent hero, moments of despair, and an overriding dim light of hope that he can somehow save his young family from the horrors of his lineage. If I picked the book up for a read, I don't know that I would have finished it, but the narration breathes life into a colorless, hopeless underworld. Worth a listen if you're into Greek mythology, demons, and finding where the line blurs between good and evil.

Unique Read with Immersing Detail

This book was chosen for our book club. Something I would never, ever chose to read but I'm happy I did. It was unique, well put together, well written, dialogue was on point. This is a unique book with demons, gods, deaths, and love. There are quite a few surprising turns. One surprise had my mouth dropping to the ground and hoping for a different outcome - you get to that part fairly early on in the book. There are a few moments were I drifted off because there might have been a few too much unnecessary detail needed for my taste but it didn't last too long where you wanted to turn the book off. All I can say is R.C. Bray has one heck of an imagination.This book takes you to places and all you do is imagine what he is going through and how he's going through it. I would love to see this as a movie just due to the detail and the set this movie would produce.
Worth. Listening. To. You have to get through the first few chapters for it to get into the knitty gritty.

Great book

This book starts a little slow and I wasn't sure about the narrator but gave him a chance... once you get used to his voice as Chet he really does a good job with the other characters. The book was very entertaining and I will definitely listen again.

Do Not Feed The Gods

I LOVED this book from beginning to end. It stayed interesting. I never wanted to turn it off. It was creepy at parts. R.C. Bray has an awesome voice, and he did every voice uniquely (and there were a LOT of characters).

I would call this a Gothic story. It emerges the reader into a deeply-designed supernatural afterlife that borrows from and blends history's cultures. The forgotten Gods were very interesting. You are guided through this realm in pieces without being forced to have to try and keep up with too much at once. This has the effect of allowing you to experience the real point of the book - an exploration of humanity. How do we deal with death, especially when it looks a little like living. How do we connect to one another? What do we do when we see the weakest among us - literally deceased infants in purgatory because of when they died - when we have our own problems to deal with, too? (BTW, the babies made me sad; it was very interesting.)

Might be able to judge this by the cover

TLDR; Dying Gods are battling to maintain power and relevance, and we get to travel the world with some of them. Great fantasy setting, a tad on the darker side. You won't come out of this one with a big happy feeling.

Lite Spoilers: We go on a trip from Earth to purgatory where religions are mixed into one giant world. Gods seem to lose power and disappear once they no longer have followers. We show up as many of the Gods are waining in power, with modern deities taking a very hands-off approach to the world, effectively not existing. The hero traverse this world to find a way to get back to earth. We follow the general hero on a mission arc, with things getting in the way. The real joy of this book is in the world, less than the story. I would have loved to see a bit where time on earth flows slower than purgatory allowing this book to stretch over multiple books, visiting more of the world.

Overall, pick this up if you like darker fantasy and you want a world to get lost in. You'll want to find a sequel and maybe we'll get one at some point.

A great trip through purgatory

Everyone talks about losing themselves in a book's world, and I can think of no better way to describe the feeling I had while reading. The author takes you through a wonderfully imagined world of God's and the dead to give you a mentally stunning image with colorful words and dialogue.

RC Bray is fantastic as always. nothing more needs to be said.

The story itself was fabulous. I doubt know that I've heard anything quite like it. I listened to the whole thing in just a few days. The conclusion was perfect & left a smile on my face despite being bummed that it's over.

A very Good take on purgatory and the old gods

very good book great story line and great narration as usual per what else can I say
