Publisher's Summary

A young man descends into purgatory to save his wife and unborn child in this tale of wonder and terror from the mind of master storyteller and acclaimed artist Brom.

Fresh out of jail and eager to start a new life, Chet Moran and his pregnant wife, Trish, leave town to begin again. But an ancient evil is looming, and what seems like a safe haven may not be all it appears.

Snared and murdered by a vile, arcane horror, Chet quickly learns that pain and death are not unique to the living. Now the lives and very souls of his wife and unborn child are at stake. To save them, he must journey into the bowels of purgatory in search of a sacred key promised to restore the natural order of life and death. Alone, confused, and damned, Chet steels himself against the unfathomable terrors awaiting him as he descends into death's stygian blackness.

With Lost Gods, Brom's gritty and visceral prose takes us on a haunting, harrowing journey into the depths of the underworld. Thrust into a realm of madness and chaos, where ancient gods and demons battle over the dead and where cabals of souls conspire to overthrow their masters, Chet plays a dangerous game, risking eternal damnation to save his family.

Reminiscent of Orpheus & Eurydice

I can't quite decide how I feel about this book. It's a sort of a backwoods-Americana-voodoo version of ancient mythological stories from Greece and Rome. It's laden with roadblocks for the persistent hero, moments of despair, and an overriding dim light of hope that he can somehow save his young family from the horrors of his lineage. If I picked the book up for a read, I don't know that I would have finished it, but the narration breathes life into a colorless, hopeless underworld. Worth a listen if you're into Greek mythology, demons, and finding where the line blurs between good and evil.

Pretty Gruesome

This book was a lot more gruesome that I was expecting. Most of the book occurs in the underworld where all kinds of horrific things happen. I thought the author's take on the gods was clever and it created quite a visual in my mind.

Interesting...a good listen

An interesting take on purgatory, the afterlife, etc. mixed in with old Gods and new Gods. It's quite a dynamic with all of those aspects intertwining. There's mythology, modern religion, revenge, love, just about everything in there. Brom does a good job of weaving it all together and making an entertaining story out of it. And as always, RC Bray does a wonderful job in his narration.

Unique Read with Immersing Detail

This book was chosen for our book club. Something I would never, ever chose to read but I'm happy I did. It was unique, well put together, well written, dialogue was on point. This is a unique book with demons, gods, deaths, and love. There are quite a few surprising turns. One surprise had my mouth dropping to the ground and hoping for a different outcome - you get to that part fairly early on in the book. There are a few moments were I drifted off because there might have been a few too much unnecessary detail needed for my taste but it didn't last too long where you wanted to turn the book off. All I can say is R.C. Bray has one heck of an imagination. This book takes you to places and all you do is imagine what he is going through and how he's going through it. I would love to see this as a movie just due to the detail and the set this movie would produce.
Worth. Listening. To. You have to get through the first few chapters for it to get into the knitty gritty.

This may be the best book I’ve ever read

Brom’s imagination is off the charts. His detailed descriptions of purgatory and those within it really brought the story to life for me. I highly recommend you look up the art work of Szukalski before reading. Use his sculptures when you imagine the beasts/gods. RC Bray was amazing as always. The ending was a perfect mix of what I was hoping for as well. Something I particularly enjoyed was the level of description; not too detailed and not too vague. Just the right amount of detail to give you the full idea without boring you with endless adjectives. An all around phenomenal book and performance.

Absolutely awesome!

I definitely need to check out more if Brom's work. This is one of the best books I've listened to all year. R. C. Bray always does an excellent job with the narration but this blows his other work away! He brings each and every character to life (or death in some cases). The voices he does for the demons and old Gods is incredible. The story itself is great! Angels, demons, and old forgotten Gods trapped in purgatory.

An immersive collection of lore the shouldn’t be missed!

This story is a soul blinding event like nothing I’ve ever read. I can’t give anything away, but imagining a place like purgatory in the authors eye is mind numbing as a book I could not put down. It’s a story of redemption after so many failures in a man’s life. How heart felt and emerging after even the most painful decisions are made by the main character. Simply amazing.

AMAZING

this book had tones of American Gods, but was excellent. So creatively imagined. And the narrator did a wonderful good delineating the voices of the charaters, without over acting.

Excellent!

RC Bray could read a phone book and make it sound riveting. And this was no phone book. Great story! A wonderful blend of myth and the paranormal. I couldn't stop listening.

Generally not my genre.

I bought this Audible because of RC Bray. He makes a mediocre story good and one of his best performances. This was actually very well written and I will probably listen to another Brom.

Great story but just too long

This is a great story; we follow Chet who goes on a quest into the underworld in an attempt to save his wife and child from a witch. He meets lots of monsters, gods, fallen angels, all sorts of nasties, and has to endure quite an assortment of trials and hard times to find what he's looking for, save the girl and kill the baddies.
Great - all sorts of exciting and interesting ideas. But, good grief - how it goes on! It's 6 hours of brilliant audiobook spread out over 14. So - I was keen to stick with it to find out how it ended, but I really wanted it just to get on with it.
If you like lots of detail about every minute thing that happens you'll love it - if you don't you'll wish there was an easy way of flicking through without missing anything key.
Brilliantly narrated.

Great narration but a frustrating tale

As is to be expected from RC Bray the narration is very well done, so much so that had it been performed by an inferior narrator I likely would have given up on the book.

The book itself I found to be a rather frustrating experience. After an interesting opening few chapters and some good set up I became increasingly frustrated and unengaged by a story that failed to engage me throughout the entire middle portion.

The mythology thrown around is all very interesting and I loved the idea of the setting but so much stuff is mentioned, hinted at, teased, and then never picked up again later. Clearly this is down to the style of the author and if you like his style then I'm sure it works well but for me I found the book far too unfulfilling. So much is left unexplored but whole chapters are devoted to the backstory and motivation of thoroughly uninteresting side characters who feature very little in the book.

On the whole it's a case of a missed opportunity really. I would have loved some exploration of the various mythologies the book combines to provide its setting but instead it meanders from one unengaging plot point to another. I did enjoy the last quarter or so but by that point I'd lost most of my enthusiasm for the book as a whole.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

Ok, not one for the faint hearted, but a great, macabre tale nonetheless. At times it reminded me a little of Neil Gaimon's 'American Gods' but I found this much more enjoyable.

Superbly read once more by RC Bray...

Gory and nice

Great narrator and story.
Believable characters and emotions. Great lore with just enough information to keep it mysterious yet believable.
Recommend Child Thief also by Brom. Has the same feel to it

Excellent Story and Performance.

This is my second book by Brom, it is supposed to be a horror set in purgatory, but it really has everything in it to be honest, horror, despair, adventure, gladiatorial games, hope of redemption, redemption and most of all it is a love story, based on man's determination to do what has to be done no matter how ugly things get protect and save his own. R.C. Bray as ever provides an sterling performance, I cannot emphasis enough how he brings the characters and the story to the listener in all its glory.
