Publisher's Summary

Lord Fenton is a gambler and a dandy, and he will be stripped of his wealth and position unless he rises to his responsibility - one of which is to marry. Far from being a giddy groom, Fenton chooses the unobjectionable Alice Stanbridge simply because he knew her as a young girl, and his mother feels Alice would make a good wife. Alice, however, has harbored feelings for Fenton since their first meeting years ago, and his proposal is a dream come true. Not only will a match with the most eligible bachelor in London secure her future, but it will also give her a place of distinction and admiration. Had anyone admired Alice for anything before now?

When Alice learns that she is not only an unwanted wife but a demanded one, however, she closes her heart. Only when Lord Fenton faces the greatest trial of his life does he begin to find love beyond the folly. Could a great love come from a beginning such as this?

A wonderful depth to the characters

Starts like many other (good and enjoyable) regency romances, but ends heads and shoulders above them. I rarely laugh out loud or cry during stories, but I did both during this one.

Loved it

I’m actually writing a review because this book was awesome. I wish it had two more chapters or so. I’d read it in a heartbeat. Fan fiction anyone?

Similar to Downton Abbey, a must read!

I laughed, I cried, I was angry, and I'm sorry it came to an end. Great book!

Such a great escape!

I just loved the simple, clean romantic story. I have listened to it twice and still want to hear it again. The story was so compelling to me and I felt the emotion of the characters so well. I enjoyed the perfect amount of drama. The narrator did well in changing voices for the characters. It was even good for listening to before bed. I fell asleep lulled but the beautiful romantic story of two people destined to love one another. Sigh... I’m such a sap.

Very good character development!

As long as this book ended up well, I was glad to read it. These two people had met when young but had not seen each other since then. Lord Fenton marries Alice in order to fulfill his father's demands and to please his mother. Alice is delighted, but not so Lord Fenton - and after they are married, he finally admits to Alice the reasons for their marriage, which devastates Alice. Both she and Lord Fenton become hard-hearted, bickering, partners of a convenient marriage. Their bickering lasts so long it really got to me! But I can see that the author needed it to be that way, so that they could both reform their attitudes. They gradually (especially Lord Fenton) reveal personal feelings to each other that gradually make them grow close, and eventually fall in love. The narrator was very good - especially at affecting Lord Fenton's "dandy" voice. This narrator made it easier to listen to this story because both the male and female voices were done so well. I'm glad that I read this book, and can recommend it to others.

Not light-hearted but beautiful nonetheless

The beginning was a bit tough for me at times because of the couple's continual arguments. (I grew up in a home with parents who fought constantly.) But, I stuck with the book and was able to enjoy the transformation of both characters in their own growth and in their growing affection and dedication to each another. The story also touched upon sacrificial love and unconditional love. A worthwhile read or, in my case, listen-to. (The narrator performed masterfully as always!)
