Publisher's Summary

A witch’s familiar must protect London from the monsters that lurk in the shadows; the creatures that seek to unravel the fabric of things and send a city to hell.

Stella Familiar was created by the London Coven out of spit and blood.

She’s a fighter, a blunt instrument, built to destroy the forces of evil and keep peace in the capital.

She’s carried out her duty for decades, but when the witches who gave birth to her are butchered, it’s up to her alone to save a city of nine million people.

Mystery, scares, and fast-paced action collide in this thrilling urban fantasy. London Coven: A Three-Book Collection, combines the first three books in the London Coven series:

  1. Familiar Magic
  2. Nightmare Realm
  3. Deadly Portent

Well done

Looking at this book initially I was a bit skeptical. I'm a huge fan of books in general and I was bound to give this collection a try and force it to prove me wrong. Was I taken aback.

Stella was very well developed and drew me in pretty quickly and oddly I was taken back to Underworld but with a more developed heroine early in the story.

Highly recommend this.

Awesome Narration, Great Series! (Love David!!)

I want to start this review by complimenting the narrator Heather Tracy.
The narration was exceptionally well done and I enjoyed it so much.
I especially loved the parts when the Main Character, Stella Familiar, get angry/ heated.. it's so well done it really felt like Heather felt the emotions too while performing.
And there is a Character in the series that uses a different voice for every word in the same sentence. As you can imagine that's a huge challenge to narrate, but this was also done perfectly. Bravo!

Stella is a likable and interesting Main Character and I loved the 'team up' with David.
David is personally responsible for 90% of the fun, laughs and lightheartedness the series, and you can't help but love him instantly.
It wouldn't been the same without him.

Despite this series containing so many elements I enjoy (excellent narration, urban-fantasy, first person narrative, surprising twists, fun and laughs, good stories, likable main and side characters, good writing) I wasn't as invested in the story as I would have liked/ expected.
I can't put a finger on why. (and maybe it's just because of my own mood?)
I did enjoy and finish the trilogy, and I think it deserves my 4/5 stars.

This trilogy is suitable for Adult (me) and Young Adult alike. (it didn't have the typical YA drama though, and for me that's a major plus!)
I thought it was more of a Mystery/ Urban-Fantasy than a Thriller.

I got this Audio Book for free (thanks!). I'm voluntarily leaving this review.
Opinions and ratings are my own and not influenced by how I got the Audio Book.

Light and amusing

It's the characters that kept me coming back for more. They're quirky and charming with amusing dialog throughout the stories. I enjoyed listening to Stella Familiar's adventures with the Uncanny inhabitants of London, but I'd say these books are a bit like potato chips. You can't have just one and when you get to the bottom of the bag you're still hungry.

I'm also glad this is a three book collection, because the second story ends on an annoying cliffhanger. I was happy to not have to wait for or search out the third book as the audio segued right into it and addressed the cliffhanger immediately.

The stories themselves are not very deep and the plot lines are a bit loose on the resolution end, and Stella does bang on a bit about the loss of her coven, but what made it all worthwhile was the superb narration. Heather Tracy has phenomenal voice skills and brings every character to life. She does an exceptional job with Mr Trick's unhinged, multi-voiced dialog. Not an easy feat and she makes it an effortless listening experience. Her comedic timing is perfect too. The many amusing exchanges in the books had me grinning or laughing out loud.

So, vivid and engaging, but not too deep. On the whole the London Coven omnibus is an enjoyable, easy listen.

Three books in 1 Audible book

This is a interesting concept dealing with the Familiar to a Coven of Witchs that killed. The MC is the Familiar and this is about how she tries to continue to protect London after her Coven is gone. The other MC is a Detective that she meets and they eventually become a team trying to protect London.

You're not even real, are you?

I have had so much fun with this series!
I'm not really a serious fantasy fan, but this certainly it's the right spot for me.
The story just suck me in. I love the humor they use in the series but they're equally good in building up to an emotional High Point just to drop you off a cliff.

“You’re Stella Familiar of the mutha-shi**ing, London, bloody coven!”

I’dread already listened to all of the Dark Lakes and Spectral Detective novels and they were amazing, so it was a no-brainier to give this a go too!
It took me a little while to get into at first as the narrator has a very different style to the other books, so it feels a little more formal and less relaxed in it’s telling, but I was soon absorbed and loved every minute of it!
It’s really important to listen to these before picking up “Other London” as that follows on from these stories.
Loved the mild cross-overs within the story and hope there’s more of that in the coming books too!
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.

Funny, exciting and very enjoyable.

I was provided a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

So I've just finished book 3 after a little over 6 months as I split the series up but this little review will be for all 3 books.

The stories follow the adventures of Stella Familiar, a magical being brought into existence by the London Witches who, at the start of book 1, are murdered in a most gruesome manner.

Early on she runs into David, a policeman who becomes embroiled in her quest for revenge and he offers a great sense of comic relief throughout all 3 books.

Stella herself is wonderfully aggressive, be it with magic or her fists, and she's not against beating answers out of her foes which is great as, all too often, women are portrayed as being meek or using just charms to get there way while Stella is happiest when she's breaking a chair over someone's head.

The stories vary from the who-dubbit of book 1 to the fantastically creepy childcatchers of book 2 and book 3 really shakes up the dynamics with a major character change, but all 3 are equally as good as one another.

There is some minor gore and quite a free lesser cuss-words, so this is firmly teen onwards but, as a 40-something, I never felt spoken down to nor like I was reading a children's fable.

The narration throughout is perfect, with brilliantly varied voices for all the cast and I'm really pleased Heather didn't try to make her voice masculine for David, but still made him instantly recognisable and everyone had a real sense of identity.

In all, a very enjoyable trilogy of stories with a brilliant protagonist, a wealth of very interesting characters, all beautifully narrated and so this one I very recommended.

those carcasses speaking !

The narrator has an exceptionally warm, open, uplifting voice, from which she can also produce the most highly-charged dramatic moments in a still very listenable way, then go even further, into unrecognisable sounds, everything from dried-up carcasses speaking, to an extra-larger-than-life, centuries-old Cumbrian witch’s familiar on a drunken psychological quest-spree in London !
