So Dave decides to figure out how Lucy manages to stay so happy, to see if he can make his own life happier by doing the things she does (except for drinking from the toilet). We never know what will happen next in Florida. We know only that, any minute now, something will. Every few months, Dave Barry gets a call from some media person wanting to know, "What the hell is wrong with Florida?" Somehow, the state's acquired an image as a subtropical festival of stupid, and as a loyal Floridian, Dave begs to differ. Sure, there was the 2000 election. Publisher's summary
An uproariously funny examination of what one generation can teach to another - or not - from the Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times - best-selling author of You Can Date Boys When You're Forty and Insane City. During the course of living (mumble, mumble) years, Dave Barry has gained much wisdom* (*actual wisdom not guaranteed), and he is eager to pass it on - to the next generation, the generation after that, and those idiots who make driving to the grocery store in Florida a death-defying experience. In brilliant, brand-new, never-before-published pieces, Dave passes on home truths to his new grandson and to his daughter, Sophie (who will be getting her learner's permit in 2015, the thought of which scares Dave silly).
He explores the hometown of his youth, when all the men went to the city in suits and hats but still seemed to be having un-Mad Men-like fun, and how they turned into the neurotic hover-parents of today. He dives into everything from Google Glass (bottom line: "You feel like an idiot") to why men hate birthdays and anniversaries; from how to speak Spanish to firsthand accounts of the soccer craziness of Brazil and the just-plain-crazy craziness of Putin's Russia, and a lot more besides. By the end, if you do not feel wiser, richer in knowledge, and more attuned to the universe...it wouldn't be surprising. But you'll have had a lot to laugh about!

Dave makes it all better
I love Dave Barry. I mean really really love him.. Every time I feel out of it or stressed or discombobulated, I can just listen to one of his books and the world is right again. As a 50 year old functional dyslexis rolled functional dyslexic, his books are one of the few types of books I can actually read. Years ago when I traveled for work I would take one of his books and sit at the airport and violently shake so hard that I would almost wet myself from laughing. The way he looks at the world and who he is really resonates with me.
This book is no different. The thing I like about this book is each chapter is relatively short. I can listen to a whole story in the book while I'm in the car headed somewhere. Come to think of it, a lot of his writing works this way this way.
Did I mention I love his work? :)

Not What I Expected
I picked this book up solely due to Dave Barry's appearance on Bill Maher's show. Dave was very funny and plugged his book successfully. I expected to find a book filled with life lessons spun in a humorous manner, however that was rarely the case with this book.
Perhaps the book just didn't play well on audio book because the "he said", "she said" format that Dave uses throughout the book just didn't play well in spoken word. His chapter about the ridiculous fear mongering on news was the most difficult to get through.
The best and most useful portion of the book was Barry's section on how modern Western society simply hover around there kids obsessively. The juxtaposition from how Dave was raised in the 60's made for some great comedic writing. This section was easily the best of the book. Dave's segments on his trips to Brazil and Russia were also enjoyable. Lastly, Dave's letter to his grandson at the end of the book was a great way to close the book out.
In the end my expectations of what I thought the book was going to be and what it turned out to be simply didn't mesh and left me trying to "get through" the book. If book had the social commentary comedic spin of the over parenting section, this review would have been a glowing praise.
If you are going to give this book a read, try it in the book format as the audio format just didn't play well.

Story
We never know what will happen next in Florida. We know only that, any minute now, something will. Every few months, Dave Barry gets a call from some media person wanting to know, "What the hell is wrong with Florida?" Somehow, the state's acquired an image as a subtropical festival of stupid, and as a loyal Floridian, Dave begs to differ. Sure, there was the 2000 election. And people seem to take their pants off for no good reason. And it has flying insects the size of LeBron James. But it is a great state, and Dave is going to tell you why.

Story
As Dave Barry turns 70 - not happily - he realizes that his dog, Lucy, is dealing with old age far better than he is. She has more friends, fewer worries, and way more fun. So Dave decides to figure out how Lucy manages to stay so happy, to see if he can make his own life happier by doing the things she does (except for drinking from the toilet). He reconnects with old friends and tries to make new ones - turns out to be a struggle, because Lucy likes people a lot more than he does.

Story
A chain of events that will change the lives of each and every character will leave some of them wiser, some of them deader, and some of them definitely looking for a new line of work. With a wicked wit, razor-sharp observations, rich characters, and a plot with more twists than the Inland Waterway, Dave Barry makes his debut a complete and utter triumph.
