Story
Jasmine has been around magic all her life. She knows the rules, and she loves to break them. When she turned 18, her shifter powers manifested, just as she expected them to. When the Magical Creatures Academy invited her to attend the prestigious school, she wasn’t surprised. When she had a fling with a flirtatious fae over the summer, she thought nothing would come of it, especially as she’s had her eye on a mighty fine shifter at the academy. But for once Jas is about to be shocked. The fae isn’t what he appeared to be, and neither is the amulet he left behind.

Unfortunately, not all people from magical bloodlines have powers, and at 22, I’m several years past the age they usually appear. So I’ve resigned myself to a boring, magic-less life. Then something strange happens. I get stuck in the middle of a bar fight, and instead of just punching the guy back, I blow a hole in the wall. So...I guess I do have powers. But they’re unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. This shit is definitely not normal. And it seems the magical authorities agree. I can go to school, learn to control my magic. Or they’ll take it away. Permanently.

The Magical Creatures Academy has sent its finest fairies to recruit her. As a hybrid shape-shifter - half siren, half angel - Selene of the Kunu Clan is one of a kind. It’s a label that makes her the target of a rebel faction of supernatural creatures that seeks to claim her power. But her power is undeveloped and more a danger to herself than an aid. Yet her magic is her only advantage over the vicious vampires and fierce shifters who seek to eliminate her.

I survived my first semester at the Academy of Unpredictable Magic. Apparently, the universe took that as a challenge.... For years, Unpredictables have been brushed aside by the rest of the magical community. Now, people are starting to pay attention - and I’m not entirely sure that’s a good thing. I’ve always been content to fly under the radar, but now that we’ve been invited to participate in the inter-academy trials, the entire school will be in the spotlight.

Gaps in Storyline and falling short
I enjoy the over all theme and storyline of this series. I read book 1 and thought that there were huge gaps in the story that should of been developed - more character development. So much room for improvement.
That being said I still read book 2 and still feel that there is much of the story that is missing that the author could of included.
I do plan on reading the rest of the stories since I hardly ever leave a series unread unless it puts me to sleep and this doesn’t do that - just wish the author took more time to deepen the world, the characters and their interactions together.
I also agree with some of the other reviewers when they say her age doesn’t match up with how she acts. She is suppose to be 18 plus in this series -on the contrary her actions and thoughts portray her as being much younger around 15/16 years of age. Still in HighSchool rather than a magical college.
I did enjoy the narrator and am happy she is continuing on with reading the series. That is always a big petpev of mine when other series switch the narrators around.
Now on to book 3!

Fun listen
This book starts after the summer. I wish we got to see some of Rina’s time in the fae realm but we do get some mentions of it which was nice. Rina and Kai still have the brothers after them and trying to kidnap them. Rina has to get stronger and better with her magic if she wants to survive this semester. The entire school is upping security and trying to keep their people safe. The vampires are acting very strange and Rina is struggling not to like Leo or do anything about her feelings. I love Rina and her lion. There are secrets and it’s hard to know who to trust. I need the next book because of that ending. We also get to learn more about Leo which was fun. I enjoyed this listen a lot it was fast and fun though there was a decent amount of drama. I’m eager for the next book!

Binge worthy!
Currently sewing face masks for local healthcare workers, it means long days in front of a sewing machine. I listened to this book all the way through in one day. It made my day go SO much faster. The story is hugely entertaining, the world and characters are so real and believable. And the narrator is my favorite of everyone I’ve listened to. Makes for a pretty winning combination!!

Another great addition to the series.
I sped through Lion Shifter and as with my review for Magical Creatures Academy #1 I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Humour, romance, suspense and plenty of magic this series seems to be the gift that keeps giving.
Kate Marcin's narration is once again a treat for the ears. Her characterisation is consistent, her comedic delivery and her ability to excite the listener, makes her a great choice for this tale.
