Publisher's summary

From the woman who has built an empire of badass female entrepreneurs comes the long-awaited sequel to Girl Code.

Cara Alwill Leyba's riveting voice and kinship with her audience drove the self-published success of Girl Code, a book that encouraged women to support each other in the business community. Now her many fans are ready to take the next step: building sustainable confidence from the ground up.

Most women who are insecure look for the equivalent of a sugar rush, such as telling themselves they're better than other people or changing the way they look. But those tricks won't protect them from losing confidence in the future. Neither will simply being outspoken and aggressive, if those traits aren't authentic.

Leyba has three simple but provocative arguments. First, confidence doesn't come from "winning"—it comes comes from ignoring the success narratives we absorb from magazines and movies. Second, the impressions people make on others depend on their personalities, not their looks—so there's no reason to use the word ugly, ever. Finally, the foundation of confidence comes from "audacious auditing", Leyba's term for identifying toxic people and habits and getting rid of them.

Written in her chatty older-sister voice, and full of revealing stories from every stage of Cara's life, Like She Owns the Place will help listeners rewire their minds to be more confident. Take it from the woman who quit her job at MTV, dyed her hair pink, and made herself a best-selling author—there's a path to becoming stronger and happier.

Critic reviews

"Urgent, powerful, and generous, this book gives you a chance to pick yourself. Cara spares us empty reassurance and offers something much more valuable: useful truth, and a plan for finding the confidence you deserve." (Seth Godin, author of Linchpin)

“Cara’s latest book is a gift to women everywhere. She’s at her most authentic and vulnerable as she inspires us to embrace every single aspect of ourselves—the real key to stepping into our power. My copy has become a precious journal I’ll refer to again and again. Bravo!” (Romi Neustadt, author of Get Over Your Damn Self)

“In Like She Owns the Place, Cara's vulnerability and honesty are the perfect reminder that what makes us great is not how flawless we can seem—it's how comfortable we are with ourselves.” (Chelsea Fagan co-founder and author of The Financial Diet)

Editorial Review

Bubbly advice for a confidence boost

While Cara Alwill Leyba’s Girl Code provided the pep talks needed to get through a tough workday, Like She Owns the Place promises to "ignite confidence from within." In her latest book, Cara focuses on lifestyle changes to help you find and assert your most authentic self—like dumping that toxic boyfriend, forgiving yourself for skipping your cycling workout, and blocking out the idea that you need to chase promotions to find success. Even though some of us don’t share a deep bond with our hair stylists (or have the funds to take champagne breaks at our desks), we can still learn a thing or two from our categorically metropolitan, pink-haired powerhouse. Her real-talk reminders, such as "stop saying you’re sorry when you have nothing to apologize for," "you don’t need plastic surgery," and "check your f*cks at the door," are confidence-building mantras intended to inspire all women to rock a neon 'do if they want to. —Rachael X., Audible Editor

So disappointed, loved her other book

I loved Cara’s other book and usually what she stands for. I was so excited for this release, pre purchased it. The book actually makes you feel worse about yourself. Cara gives this superiority and gives off a judgy vibe like she’s better than everyone else. While saying “do you” but then your not quite as good cause your not doing my way. I get what she’s trying to do with the “high vibe” movement but she went about it so harshly. Definitely disappointed if you let people be them don’t write like your better than others.

Disappointed

I love her voice and could listen to her audios all day and I loved the authors book “girl code” and came away with so many take aways and tangible things to improve relationships and business. But this book is not only filled with cursing , but it lacks the tangible things to put into practice. It’s more of a story about her but without the advice to help the listener in their stories and lives. It could just not be my style and that’s ok, but was hoping for more with this book.

Cara delivers!

This book will inspire you to take a good look at what is really going on inside. I personally love the mantras she has in here and even have one hanging in my living room! Amazing book and different thought process behind some of the same ideas I’ve heard before!! Brava Cara!

Too much profanity

The basic message of the book could help your self confidence, but all the profanity is distracting. I would not recommend it to other ladies because of this .

Confidence Boosting!

I did not think I’d enjoy this book at first, because I felt like I’d exhausted my need for girl power, self love books. But I am glad I stuck it out. It improved my mood everyday after listening to it, and made me feel empowered. Her voice is easy to listen to, and it isn’t too long or self-indulgent. Good read for young women in search of a little boost

Grab Your Coffee & a Notebook

I love Cara, and this is my favorite work of hers to date. Inspiring and empowering, this is one I will listen to [thrice] the next time I need a reality check from a friend. Her workbooks and sweatshirt are on point as well.

Cute book, but why does she talk like that?

Why is it that some people (usually women) exaggerate almost every single word they say? The author modulates her voice in an animated/fake kind of way. It does not sound genuine or natural and it's extremely obnoxious to listen to..
The content of the book itself was nice, though.
