Publisher's Summary

The seven Seals were broken and the trumpets sounded, their notes echoing around the world. Four horsemen had emerged from the midst of roiling storms and set loose upon humanity. Civilization ended in smoke and flame with clouds of radioactivity encircling the globe. 144,000 had been marked and were the only survivors, driven underground by the poisonous conditions and the nuclear winter which followed the exchange of atomic weapons. The exception is a valley held under the protection of four angels holding a corner of the world free. Those few who remain hold the future hope for humanity in a land where the darkness holds sway. As demons walk freely among the sanctuaries, will they be able to upset the balance and drive the last vestige of light from the land?

Way better than the first

The first book kind of dragged on and on and set the stage for this book, but this book was really good and I’m looking forward to the next in the series

great second part to a great series

I read it, loved it! But listening to it is a whole different level of horror as to what can very well become of humanity if pushed to the limit. some will break, others will gain strength to do right and wrong each believing they are right. Others will use it a an opportunity to continue there way, whether for good or bad.
John O'Brien has given us these scenarios in spades. The action is centered on the aftermath of humanity's near destruction with a smattering of hope and desolation which in my opinion is but a stepping stone to the true horror yet to come.
I was also impressed with the amount of research he has done to give us an idea of what the reader can expect.(his research of Angels and Demons is very well done, although he does admit to some liberties taken). In all, it was very well written and left me just a little unsettled in his insight of events that, while they might not be plausible, could very well be possible. Kudos once again Mr. O'Brien for a very well written take of....terror...horror? you decide...

Book 2 is mostly an extension of book 1

This is one of those stories that would lose you despite it’s quality because it takes forever to get to the payoff. The first book aphid amble room to cover what should have been the run up to emergence day. It’s not bad writing or narration but it went far too much into irrelevant details. This is a Post apocalyptic biblical fanfic, That comes across as as a far more military/hardcore survival narrative. Book 2 spends even more time doing what book 1 does.

Wow, this series just got better!

I struggled with the first book, it was a lot of setting the story up so seemed "technical" to me, I am so glad I stuck with it though this book was amazing!

Straight on to this from book 1

As i said in review of first book this is a strange but good concept of good vs evil with the new and ancient in tune with each other. I really do like these books and enjoy listening to them and am now hooked. You really should give it a go.

Great book. John has set the scene for the rest of the series and I can't wait to see them.
