From the best-selling author of The Girl from Munich and Suitcase of Dreams comes an unforgettable tale of love, courage, and betrayal inspired by a true story

Berlin, 1943

As the Allied forces edge closer, the Third Reich tightens its grip on its people. For 18-year-old Susanna Göttmann, this means her adopted family including the man she loves, Leo, are at risk.

Desperate to protect her loved ones any way she can, Susie accepts the help of an influential Nazi officer. But it comes at a terrible cost - she must abandon any hope of a future with Leo and enter the frightening world of the Nazi elite.

Yet all is not lost as her newfound position offers more than she could have hoped for.... With critical intelligence at her fingertips, Susie seizes a dangerous opportunity to help the Resistance.

The decisions she makes could change the course of the war, but what will they mean for her family and her future?

"An original and innovative take on the World War II genre that captures the hauntingly desperate essence of the war. Tania Blanchard has written yet another spectacular novel. Don’t miss this." (Better Reading)

Mixed thoughts

The story had many powerful parts to it and contained a history that must never be forgotten. However, the narration and wording around intimate love story moments just didn’t fall true to “letters to a daughter”concept. It let the belief and credibility of the story down considerably.

narration was wonderful but the story telling was lacking and found the conversations unrealistic and unimaginative

Did not enjoy this

I couldn't finish this story. Still got 2h left, have reached the end of the war and I just don't care what happens. The premise of letters to the daughter play no role in the actual storyline, and the age of daughter and granddaughter seem unrealistic too.
"Entering the world of Nazi elite" while mentioned a few times, only had 2-3 actual fleshed out scenes to it, and should really not be a selling point in the story description at all.
Yes, this story had a few interesting parts to it, including a couple of decent plot twists, which made me not give up half way through, but it's just not enough. Too many parts of the story that could've had an interesting/tense scenes were simply skipped and the end result given instead, which was disappointing.

Well plotted

It was great to read such a detailed and well plotted WW2 story. I thought this era had faded from in-demand fiction but it seems to be making a revival. This story is, in my opinion, ripe for a film or TV series

Brilliantly written and unbearably heartbreaking

This was a beautiful but heart wrenching story based on true lives. I knew much about the unbelievably cruel treatment of the Jewish people and still find it difficult to think about, but what I did not know was the Russian invasion of Berlin after the war and how peoples properties were simply “taken”. I will not say too much about the story concerning Susie and Leo so as not to spoil it for others.
Incredibly poignant story, thank you Tanya.
