Publisher's summary

No books. No long lists of vocabulary. No chance of failure.

Welcome to Learn with Paul Noble—a tried-and-tested language-learning method that has been used by over one million people to speak fluently and confidently.

With Paul Noble’s simple, relaxed approach, you will learn in a way that suits you—without having to memorise long lists of words you won’t use; scribbling notes as you listen; or feeling frustrated. Instead, Paul will introduce you to the basics of Japanese and guide you through over 15 hours of everyday scenarios—from simple situations like asking for directions and eating out to talking about yourself and how to master the different tenses—that are practical, fun and applicable. Just listen, interact and learn wherever you are.

Whatever your experience with languages, whether you’re an absolute beginner or someone with basic knowledge who wants to improve their ability, this is the course to get you speaking Japanese quickly and confidently.

A native Japanese expert will help you to perfect your pronunciation as you progress through the course. You will learn a huge range of vocabulary in no time at all, and be able to quickly make your new knowledge work for you in a variety of everyday scenarios. A downloadable booklet is also included to use as a reference and revision tool.

Paul Noble left school unable to speak a language—having found that the traditional learning methods left him feeling ‘confused, incapable and unable to really say anything’. Determined that there must be a better way to learn, Paul spent years devising his own unique method of learning languages which cuts out all the grammar, all the memorisation and all the stress. He began using his method to teach in his Language Institute and, thousands of students later, he prides himself on never having had a student fail.

This download contains the entire course—Parts 1, 2 and 3. To continue your language-learning journey once you’ve completed this course, download Next Steps in Japanese with Paul Noble for Intermediate Learners—Complete Course.

Easy to follow

I really liked how this course teaches you the proper conjugations and grammar at the same time they teach you the vocabulary. They lead you to figure out the likely conjugations by yourself and give plenty of review throughout the entire course. I started the book with 0 Japanese vocab outside of hello and goodbye and I am surprised at how much I can understand now, though it’s only the tip of the iceberg. A great place to start for beginners

Just Finished

Really enjoyed this during my commute. He does a great job of breaking things down. Only complaint I may have would be that sometimes Paul is a bit quiet and hard to hear. Overall though this was worth getting.

Very Gentle But Effective Introduction!

I will preface this review by stating that I am not a complete beginner in Japanese, so my perspective may not be the same as someone who has much less experience with the language. Still, I have sampled several different methods for speaking Japanese, and this is by far the easiest I have tried! I love that Mr Noble gives detailed, but practical grammar explanations. Not enough explanations makes learning a language more cumbersome and less efficient for many learners, myself included. Granted, the repetition is so much that it becomes a bit boring— you may want to set the speed to 1.5X or higher once you feel comfortable enough responding. Another possible drawback is that there are no conversations for listening comprehension, like Pimsleur has, but this makes Japanese much more accessible for people who want a good grasp of the basics before a more intense challenge. As for the content, only a few verbs are covered, but these are given in several tenses, and there is even a short introduction to て-form (Te-form)! Some basic functions of the particles に ni, を (w)o, は wa, でde, and と to are offered, and there is some discussion of polite language versus honorific language. Mr Noble tends to prefer the more casual or shortened forms of a few expressions, so if your Japanese needs to be particularly formal or honorific, you may find it a bit lacking in that regard. As a user-friendly introduction to a language native English speakers often find exotic, though, it is top-notch! I have already purchased Next Steps in Japanese as well, and I look forward to it!
