Publisher's summary

Stories tell of great fire-breathing beasts large as castles, fierce and deadly, capable of magicks that no human can match. The Kingdom of Kentaine once allied itself with the dragons of old, but eventually, the dragons were lost to time and fell into legend.

Sir Gawain, First Knight of the Realm, is tasked by his older sister the Queen to travel to the edges of their kingdom, where a beast is flaming villagers and has the locals ready to form a mob and hunt it down themselves. His mission is to find the dragon, stop the violence, and do what he needs to maintain the peace.

His journey puts him in the heart of a confrontation with the dragon, but instead of saving the villagers, it is the dragon that needs rescuing. Zephyr, a fire dragon and an escaped slave, needs protection, time to heal, and a chance at a life full of hope.

Gawain can do no less than offer his sword, his shield, and his heart. Evil is hunting Zephyr, and it will not stop until it has reclaimed its prize.

Beyond the legends lies the truth, and love, like fire, consumes everything it touches.

Contains mature themes.

Practically Perfect in Every Way!

I SUPER LOVED THIS!!!

I cannot wait for more about these two! This is exactly what you want in a story. It moves along quickly. There’s action, adventure, true love, an adorable dragon with a tragic past, royalty, loads of magic, and some smexy times!
I just couldn’t get enough of Zephyr. I love him!!!! He is cute, a funny, and curious and sweet and loving and fierce – all wrapped up in a delightful package. Even though he has a madman after him, he’s still very optimistic and engaging.

Gawain is nice. Maybe a little underdeveloped as a character, but still lovely and a wonderful foil for Zephyr.

I can’t recommend this enough!

Audio

Joel Leslie ROCKED this! He gave Zephyr an amazing voice and found a way to make him sound serpentine! Wonderful! I’d give it as many stars as you’ve got!

AMAZING!

Oh my god this is amazing. Good story line, and I don’t even normally like dragons. But I loved it. And absolutely phenomenal narration. Highly enjoyable and recommendable.

Sexy Dragon

OMG Joel voicing this dragon was everything. I loved the hissing that he put into the words to make it more effective.

Sweet and sexy

Awww. That was totes adorable. It went down like Saturday morning cartoons… except for the MM nooky (three scenes once past the halfway point) which was definitely not for kids. Dragon Zephyr gets only enough backstory to make him the innocent needing to be protected, Sir Gawain gets even less development beyond his noble heart and good looks, and there’s no villain to chew the scenery (in fact, the villain remains faceless throughout). That’s because this is a romance, and a novella to boot.
For what it is, I found it captivating. I’ll get novella two, when it comes along.

If you’re looking for fantasy with more story to support a dragon, ye old accents, and MM romance,
I recommend The Lightning Struck Heart, that begins the Tales From Verania series. It’s got more heart, humor, and story, if you can handle the “jazz hands” over the top juvenile jokes and raunch.

Four Hours of An Original Fairy Tale

Seriously, slightly edited (just taking the bed shenanigans out), this would make an awesome bedtime story.

Joel is the perfect narrator for this one.

I'm glad there's going to be more in the series (this is a HFN ending, although the romance isn't in question).

recommend.

Adorable Dragon

The only criticism I have for this book is that it ended. Zephyr is such an adorably sweetheart Dragon, and Sir Gawain is a beautiful Knight of honor. A sweet love story of a Dragon held captive for years escaping and fleeing from a bad Mage, and the Knight sent to help him falling in love. This was a thrilling action filled short listen. Joel Leslie's narration was excellent. I had the pleasure of watching a live feed of him narrating a chapter and the book turned out even better than I expected.

Odd

It’s not bad but a bit odd. There are lots of books about dragons and people falling in love. I haven’t read any of them… well I guess this one. I really like S.J. Himes so I wanted to read everything she has published. I think this would have been a bit less odd if the dragon were a bit more like a person. But, to each their own. And it wasn’t a bad book or anything. My only other minor complaint would be that it ends a bit abruptly. It’s abrupt because there are unresolved plot points. Like the main bad guy.

fluffy

It's review time 🎧
Knight’s Fire
By SJ Himes
Narrated by Joel Leslie
Narrator score🎧 ; Joel as always was perfection. The voice he gave the dragon was so good!

Level of steam🔥: it wasn't a long story but, never mind that.... you get your hotness in here and its sweet and so very clever.

Level of anxiety and sadness0😱😢: not a sad story at all .

The book itself📖: the story itself is very short....(hours is short for me) and very very sweet... it's a story about a dragon and his saver ..... it's a very cute fluffy story that I liked a lot maybe the story could have been longer and more developed but somehow it worked just fun for me

A sweet short story

It is a sweet short story. There is very little world building but enough to hook readers and provide a satisfying peek into the intricacies of the story's setting. The romance was quick but expected from such a short book.

🎧 I chose this book because Joel Leslie was narrating, and it kept me engaged during my chores. As always, Joel narrated masterfully.

The beginning of a great relationship

I love dragons and this book introduces a dragon you cannot help but fall in love with. Having escaped a cruel mage, who stole his magic, and kept him chained and starved, he is found by his knight who wants to save the broken injured dragon.

Short and sweet but needed more

Sir Gawain has been tasked by his sister, the Queen, to investigate reports of a dragon in a remote part of the Kingdom. Zephyr has escaped an evil mage but his wings are damaged and his magic is depleted. The fearful nearby villagers are hellbent on killing the dragon and Sir Gawain’s retinue are his only hope. When Zephyr transforms into human form, Sir Gawain is completely captivated. This is a sweet romantic fantasy, with some nice world-building. With the instalove romance the main focus, the plot is light with few hurdles or twists and ends abruptly - it was a bit unsatisfying. The talented Joel Leslie narrates the audiobook with a wealth of accents, though I really wish he’d learn how to pronounce ‘grimaced’ (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue).
