Publisher's Summary

The massacre at Tancred House seems at first to be the work of a burglar, panicked into killing. But Chief Inspector Wexford believes there are links with the murder of a Kingsmarkham detective some ten months earlier.

One of Rendell's Best

At this point I have read over half of the novels in the Wexford series. This is a superb addition - perhaps the best in the series.

Even better when read aloud

I love Ruth Rendell, and read this many years ago. I downloaded it for a long journey, expecting just to listen to it as a kind of background noise - instead I was transfixed! Wonderful!

Interesting

Very good story, held your interest, could not wait for end to see if I was right but ending was too quick, even if I was correct.

Awful narration

The voice is awful, completely monotone and makes it impossible to enjoy the story. I much preferred the narrators used for the other Ruth Rendell books.

Tried and tried but couldn’t focus in

Unfortunately for me I just couldn’t get into the narrators voice I knew how it would end right from the beginning, I guess because the intonation is the narration betrayed that it was either just wrong, or it was so obviously lies I’m not articulating myself well but I just didn’t manage to engage with the book but I think it’s because of the narration. Maybe listen to a clip before you download just to see if it’s your thing
