A wager. A masquerade. A kiss that changes everything.

Lady Helena Fairfax has spent two years in mourning, not for the husband she lost but for the life she never had. When an unexpected invitation to a midnight masquerade arrives, she seizes the chance to step out of her shadows and into a world of intrigue. Disguised as a daring temptress, she intends to claim one night of freedom and forget the constraints of her carefully controlled world.

Johnathan Seton, Duke of Hargate, is a man who thrives on risk. When a wager leads him to the midnight masquerade, he expects nothing more than a frivolous distraction. What he doesn’t anticipate is a captivating stranger whose sharp wit and passionate kiss leave him yearning for more.

But Helena’s newfound courage is shaken when she discovers the Duke’s identity—and realizes their lives are intertwined in ways neither could predict. As the clock strikes twelve, their masks come off, and their pasts collide with secrets that could destroy them both.

Caught between desire and danger, Helena and Johnathan must decide if they can trust each other with their hearts—or if one unforgettable kiss is all they’ll ever share.

Kiss a Rogue at Midnight is a tale of forbidden romance, daring escapades, and the transformative power of love under the veil of mystery.

Widowed Lady Helena Fairfax has mourned her late husband for the expected two years, and now decides to have some fun. The author provides little information about her previous married life, but it left her with the desire to control her own life, and to never marry again. She decides to attend a masquerade ball and to 'kiss a roue at midnight.' As fortune (or misfortune) would have it, the man she kisses is a duke, known to her, and they are connected in a way that makes him quite forbidden. But it doesn't matter. A kiss is not enough, and he feels the same, and they ae soon engaged in a torrid affair. But soon whispers threaten to reveal them. Helena faces scandal, and the duke, William, faces the requirement to marry a proper and 'untouched' woman or lose his inheritance. What sacrifices is each willing to make for love?

I enjoyed this steamy Regency romance, and appreciated Helena's struggle to maintain control over her personal and financial life. However, it seemed unfair that William made most (all?) of the sacrifices.

I listened to the audio and found the narration spirited and reflective of each MCs character.

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. It was engaging, dramatic, and full of longing.
Lady Helena Fairfax is such a compelling heroine. She isn’t loudly rebellious, but you can feel how trapped she’s been in her carefully controlled life. Her decision to attend the midnight masquerade felt brave and a little reckless in the best way. I loved that her “mourning” isn’t for her late husband, but for the life she never truly lived. That emotional layer added depth to what could have been just a fun masquerade romance.
William Attberry, Duke of Powis, is exactly the kind of hero I enjoy in historical romance. Confident, a little daring, but not cold. The tension between him and Helena at the masquerade was beautifully done. Their banter sparkled, and that first kiss? It absolutely delivered.
As an audiobook, this story shines. The narrator captures the elegance of the setting and the emotional shifts between guarded and vulnerable moments. The masquerade scenes felt vivid, and their was  just the right amount of drama when all is revealed.
The romance leans into longing and secrets rather than fast-paced action, which worked well for me. It’s more about trust and emotional risk than big twists, and I appreciated that focus.
If you like historical romances with secret identities, emotional healing, and a swoony duke who falls hard after one kiss, this is a lovely audiobook to spend an afternoon with.

This such a good story with a masquerade ball, a lady in scarlet and a shared kiss begins a passionate journey for a Rogue and a widow. The story short and fairly quick and lovely. She is determined to live on her terms. She is a touch on the forbidden side but he is drawn to her from the beginning. I love the story and that he was willing to give her everything.

Helena desires a relationship where she can control her own life, and to be loved and valued by the man she chooses. William feels controlled by the expectations of his title. He, too, wants to control his life. Two strong-willed people who find a way to find in the love and value they so desire. An engaging story from the Hearts Aflame series. Very nice narration by Tara-Louise Kaye.
