Story
The scales have tipped. The battle for Namdhor, the north, and the entire realm of man was a sure victory for the orcs. But they lost. Now, under the rule of a would-be-king, the armies of man fuel the war when they should be bolstering their defenses. Only a few understand that time is against them, yet these few must fight alone if the dawn is to rise over Illian once more. The heroes of the realm have banded together, but they cannot fight side by side. There is only one way they can win, seen by the oldest dragon and preserved inside the broken mind of a ranger.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Centuries ago, the murder of a beloved king tore apart the Kingdom of Caledun. The land was plunged into chaos and thousands perished. A new order was established in an attempt to return Caledun to its former glory. It failed, but in its place rose the beginnings of the Code. The World Has Fallen Into Ruin. Myth and Legend Have Proven True. Monsters Have Returned to Illian.
Orcs, an ancient fiend thought lost to history, have risen from The Under Realm. Their hunger for total dominance has plunged Illian into war, pushing the survivors to Namdhor, the last refuge of man at the top of the world.
For those who stand up to this foe, they do so in darkness. Ash clouds smother the skies, blocking out the sun as the orcs rampage across the land.
Behind it all, manipulating from the shadows, The Black Hand fuels the war on both sides. The Crow, the one who was promised, has seen the future and works in the depths of The Bastion to forge a new weapon, a weapon that can stand against the dark at all costs.
Gideon Thorn is adrift, his order decimated, and his oath to protect the realm meaningless. The Master Dragorn faces his greatest test yet, balancing his duty to the people and his duty to his order.
Inara Galfrey has a choice to make as the realm’s darkest hour approaches. Malliath and Asher cannot be ignored but holding fast to her courage could save the world. It could also spell her end.
Doran Heavybelly finds himself at the throne of his father. There are realms of hell he would rather visit than the halls of his ancestors. Shackled and bound, however, the dwarf has no choice but to face his past....

Not a book for these times. Sadistic main characte
This book is putting me into a depression with it's sadistic main character of the Crow. I've found the series now during the COVID-19 pandemic and I've loved the series until now. This book is pushing me over the edge. I hate the fact that it's placing me in a depression. I don't know if I'll be able to finish it. The vile, sadistic character of the Crow is more than I can handle. I can't punish the narrator as all he's doing is reading the story and dialog, so I will reward him with a good review, but the book is vile. I can't recommend this book, I can't ever remember when I encountered a character this horrid managing to destroy a book for me. I guess some will take this as a high recommendation but sadism is not something I appreciate at any point. The Crow is a sadist and he's forcing another character to be the masochist against his will. That relationship in normally based upon a willing relationship. This is not willing

Brand is the worst
I truly don't get the appeal. His diction is dreadful. His character voices are terribly limited- I can't tell one from another, About the best he can offer is a slightly higher pitch for female characters, but that's it. And there is not vocal inflection when the description of a voice is, for example, "Low and guttural" ... he just blows through the line as if that descriptive doesn't matter.
I seriously don't get the appeal. The story here is really better and would be much improved with someone better at narration. I could literally name about 10 or 15 male narrators who would fit the bill better than Brand. I see something he's narrating now and I pass it by, and that annoys me. But I don't want to waste money on a product I KNOW will irritate me to no end.
Mr. Quaintrell's story deserves better than this.

Very Disappointing
Huge fan of the series until this book. Most of the main characters don't stay true to who they were before. They continually take the easiest path out bending to the will of the villains without really fighting back. People who made smart choices in previous books suddenly just act like mindless idiots that are unable to think under pressure. the training sessions with the Crow are just horrible in every way and not enjoyable to listen to. Painful to listen to and not anywhere close to the level of the previous books.

like it.
the first three books were amazing. the next part in the series (4 books in) are pretty good. the whole future seeing stuff just has something to it I don't find as enjoyable. hopefully some payoff is close at hand with the character but it seems like he's been stuck for like 2 whole books and it's a bit of a drag. I have hope I will be happy with the ending just have to finish. all in all one of the better series I've listened to so far

Don't listen to naysayers, alot of horrible things happen in the story but it is character building. This is the hard getting kick when your down part for the heroes. But getting knocked down does not matter... What matters is if the heroes get back up...

This is the first time Ive wrote a review!
I have thoroughly enjoyed, The Echoes Saga books. I've listened to all Nine of them, some multiple times. And the narrator is on of my favorite narrator's. Not to say that he's the best but almost every book he's performed I have loved. Like the Seven Virtues books and the Ravens Shadow books. Both series are amazing fantasy stories. But Brand can rub some people the wrong way. It's all matter of opinion. If you would rather read it yourself they're available on Kindle unlimited for free with a trial. I wish people would stop trying to talk people away from good stories by listing they're opinions as facts. And if you are going to be a critic of others works, at least learn how to spell, or where punctuation goes. Smh

Disappointed
I mainly listen to audiobooks when I go to bed on sleep timer for 30 minutes unless it’s a really great story and I listen at work ( ear buds) . I always rewind to the obvious point I fell asleep and go again . I found the endless names very tedious and felt the story has lost its way to the point I wasn’t bothering to rewind in the previous book of this story and again in this one . I’ve always finished a set of books however long but won’t be buying anymore of this set .
