Publisher's Summary

Crimson, the bloodthirsty, sadistic King of Hearts, is a villain. Or at least he’s supposed to be. That’s just how things work in Wonderland, a strange, fanciful place filled with heroes and villains who always seem to be at odds.

Crim is in a very dark place after the hero Alister Kingsley wins the Wonderland joust and marries Madeline Hatter. He should have known better than to hope for true love since villains don’t get "happy endings".

But there’s something fishy afoot. Even though Crim loves Madeline, he can’t stop thinking about his Cheshire Cat slave, Katrina, who remains trapped in an enchanted sleep. Only true love’s kiss can break a sleeping curse, and Crim has tried that already. Don’t get him wrong. He doesn’t love Katrina. He just misses her delicious raspberry tarts terribly and will stop at nothing until she can bake them for him again.

Like sharks smelling blood in the water, Crim’s enemies make their move when the King of Hearts shows a moment of weakness caused by his recent defeat at Alister’s hands and his inability to break Katrina’s curse. The Queen of Hearts and Crim’s birthmother, Cordelia, has two powerful allies in her arsenal: the Other Artist, Alice, and the Sorcerer Maleficent.

Crim later discovers that the saying "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" is true when the Cheshire Cat People decide to join Crim in retaking the Red Kingdom from the clutches of Alice’s army, which is made up of vicious Dark Fairies and human-sized insects.

Can a villain become the hero Wonderland needs before it’s too late, or will Wonderland be plunged into an eternal darkness forever?

King of Hearts: A Wonderland Story

This is a fun and interesting story of an adventure in Wonderland. Most people will recognize many of the characters and references in this book. The characters are familiar but with a twist. I enjoyed seeing this adventure play out. The story is full of strong characters and a good plot that grabs your attention and keeps it until the very end. Crim and Katrina are good together and I enjoyed seeing the two find their way to each other as they help fight the Queen of Hearts in a battle for Wonderland. I really liked seeing the growth of Crim throughout his ordeals. He learns a lot and he becomes the man he was meant to be. It was nice to see the camaraderie that grows between all the characters. The story moves along at a good pace and the author does a wonderful job of taking you down the rabbit hole. Narrator L. A. Johnson does a good job of breathing life into the characters and had me quickly engulfed in the story right from the start.

Fantastic, fast-moving spin on a classic!

King of Hearts: A Wonderland Story, Genderbent Fairytales Collection, Book 4 by KuroKoneko Kamen and narrated by L. A. Johnson is another fantastic modern day take on some elements of older fairytales. I highly recommend if you are like me and are not a fan of old school fairytales or enjoy an adult, modern twist to them.

What to expect: the summary does an excellent job but for those who need just a tad bit more- magic, energy shields, humor, enchanted forest, dragon, jabberwocky, tweedledee and tweedledum, weapons, death, Cheshire cat girl and cat people, relationships difficulties, control collars, curses, painting items that come to life, and so much more. I’ll leave it at this as I don't want to give away spoilers. Trust me when I say it is worth listening. It will keep you engaged and you’ll never quite know what path the author is going to take you down.

The narrator, L. A. Johnson, was pleasant. I thought this narration was smoother than the previous book.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: this is a book for adults and adults who can handle things like not so good characters, occasional swearing, death, slavery, strained relationships, and like things.

Great retelling

I totally love gender bender type version of this book and this author did a wonderful job. The characters and world building had depth to them. While I have not read/listened to any of the rest of the series I did not feel lost at all in the story. The narrator did a wonderful job with this story, he brought all the characters to life.

King of Hearts

I love the re-imagined story which is something new to me. The stories of characters you heard about growing up can be heartbreaking but I’ve loved the journey and the endings so far

Fantastic

I received this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. Crimson the king of hearts is mad because he lost the contest he was hoping to win but something starts nagging on him and he doesn’t know why. Crimson than learns the truth that he was made to forget his previous memories. With the help of some unlikely people he goes to fight for the love he forgot and some newer enemies.

An interesting twist on fairytales

Although most of the characters have been met in Alister In Wonderland, this story is a stand alone. I did enjoy it more by understanding the history of the characters though. Crimson is a villain, but his past has created who he is. "Off with their head" is his answer for anything. But deep down he is missing something. This story is about searching for that something. Crimson chooses the wrong path many times before he can find the way back to his heart. I loved the introduction to Alice, and her role in the story. Many familiar names are intertwined into Wonderland to make this story fun to read.

L.A Johnson brought this story to life. Mr. Johnson kept the tones of each character consistent with the previous book, so it was very easy to follow. Mr. Johnson's narration of Crimson was spot on. Crimson went through so many different emotions, and attitudes that he was a complex character. Mr. Johnson brought all of that to life through his narration. MR. Johnson's narration enhanced the experience of this story.

Entertaining & Engaging Genderbent Retelling!

This book was a unique gender bent version on a well known tale. I really liked the way it was done. The characters had depth to them and their backgrounds were more fleshed out as the story went on which made them relatable. The story was not just a gender bent version of Alice in Wonderland but it also had some new twists and touched on some serious subjects. All put together this made for an entertaining and engaging read.
The audiobook itself was well produced. The narrator spoke clearly and was also able to portray the characters emotions easily.
I’m a big Alice fan and a fan of retellings in general so I look forward to listening to other books in this series and by this author.

King of Hearts

A perfect remake of Alice in Wonderland with a twist. I really enjoyed listening to this book and seeing where it went. The switching of genders made this book all the more interesting and watching Crimson fund his way through pain and his happy ending was definitely a great listen. I haven’t listened to any of the other books in this series and can say that this book can definitely be read as a stand-alone.
