A magnificent new novel from the bestselling, award-winning author of An American Marriage—Tayari Jones has written an unforgettable novel that sparkles with wit and intelligence and deep feeling about two lifelong friends whose worlds converge after many years apart in the face of a devastating tragedy.

“Tayari Jones’s storytelling washed over me like a trip back home. . . . Kin is a masterpiece of a novel that will live with you long after you turn the last page.” —Oprah Winfrey

Vernice and Annie, two motherless daughters raised in Honeysuckle, Louisiana, have been best friends and neighbors since earliest childhood but are fated to live starkly different lives. Raised by a fierce aunt determined to give her a stable home in the wake of her mother’s death, Vernice leaves Honeysuckle at eighteen for Spelman College, where she joins a sisterhood of powerfully connected Black women and discovers a world of affluence, manners, aspiration, and inequality. Annie, abandoned by her mother as a child and fixated on the idea of finding her and filling the bottomless hole left by her absence, sets off on a journey that will take her into a world of peril and adversity, as well as love and adventure, culminating in a battle for her life.

A novel about mothers and daughters, friendship and sisterhood, and the complexities of being a woman in the American South, Kin is an exuberant, emotionally rich, unforgettable work from one of the brightest and most irresistible voices in contemporary fiction.

Editorial Review

The bonds that make us Kin
I can't believe it's been eight years since the release of An American Marriage, which remains one of my favorite listening experiences. It's a powerful novel about a young marriage undone by injustice when the husband is wrongfully convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison. I know Tayari Jones's new novel will also pack an emotional punch. In Kin, Jones explores female friendship, chosen family, and Black Southern womanhood through the lives of two motherless daughters whose lives diverge dramatically from their Louisiana roots. One finds sisterhood at Spelman; the other embarks on a perilous journey of self-discovery. Told in alternating perspectives with narrators Angel Pean and Ashley J. Hobbs bringing these women to life, this promises to be a listen worth clearing my calendar for. — Margaret H., Audible Editor

I really enjoyed this book. I was hoping more from the ending. I was almost shocked that there was nothing else to the story.

Worth the read, but ending could have been better.

This story is more than friendship… it’s survival, So many things and tidbits conjoined together for so many circles of conversations that need to be had today… yesterday… and tomorrow.

Who can’t love a good story…

The story was engaging and the characterizations felt authentic. Each character’s voice was unique. The author’s use of metaphor evoked visual details that were both cultural and specific. I loved this book!

Loved the story and the narrators were so apropos. I didn’t want it to end.
