Jim Dale's Grammy Award-winning performance of J.K. Rowling's iconic stories is a listening adventure for the whole family.

Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter 'H'.

Close your eyes and enter the magical world of Harry Potter. In these editions, Jim Dale's characterful narration is so entertaining, fun, and theatrical you can almost hear the crackle of the fire in the Gryffindor common room.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Having become classics of our time, the Harry Potter stories never fail to bring comfort and escapism. With their message of hope, belonging and the enduring power of truth and love, the story of the Boy Who Lived continues to delight generations of new listeners.

Jim Dale - Performer

About the Performer

Few performers have had as diverse and fascinating a career as Jim Dale. Born in the small market town of Rothwell, Northamptonshire, Dale trained as a ballet dancer for six years but it was a series of stand-up performances in 1951 that put him on the map as one of Britain’s young comedians. In the 1960s, his singing and songwriting earned him an Academy Award nomination for the title theme to Georgy Girl. Dale then turned to the stage, starring in dozens of productions with the British National Theatre Company and on Broadway, including The Taming of the Shrew, Oliver!, and Candide. In 1980, his portrayal of the circus showman in Barnum won him both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. (Over the course of his career, he’d earn four additional Tony nominations and five Drama Desk wins.)

In 2009, Dale was inducted in the American Theater Hall of Fame; five years later, his one-man-show Just Jim Dale opened in New York City to tremendous praise and critical acclaim. Audiobook fans will recognize him for his impeccable, finely tuned voice work. In the Harry Potter series alone, he has given life to hundreds of characters, expertly distinguishing every witch, wizard, house-elf, and goblin. He has captured hearts around the globe—including that of Queen Elizabeth II, who named him a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2003. In addition to the Harry Potter series, Dale has narrated other kid favorites such as The Hundred Acre Woods, Peter Pan, and Alice in Wonderland, making fantastical worlds and characters even more magical. Dale has won two Grammy Awards for his narration of the fourth and seventh Harry Potter books, 11 Audie Awards, over a dozen AudioFile Earphone Awards, and was the first to be inducted into the American Audio Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Audible Narrator Hall of Fame in 2017 and remains a much-adored and highly celebrated narrator, beloved by millions of listeners around the world.

I have listened to this series probably 50 times and I was thrilled to see it finally on Audible. The first book, fourth book and book 7 are my favorites. I can almost recite the each of the books. Jim Dale is wonderful and the very best choice for this series. He is amazing. This is one case that the books are so much better than the movies. J.K. Rowling is a genius, what an imagination that woman has. I would recommend this series to anyone of any age. Love, love, love it.

Best series ever written

This is my first go through the Harry Potter series and it’s off to a strong start. The other narrators have a lot to live up to because Jim Dale is simply magical. He pronounces Voldemort as “Voldemor” which doesn’t have the same effect but it’s forgivable for the voices and the enthusiasm he brings are just delightful. Very easy to recommend.

The Narrator is BRILLIANT

This is first series since Narnia and Lord of the Rings that compleyely captivated me from the first page of book one, till the last page of the last book. I assume most everyone has read the books by now. Listening to them read by Jim Dale is a special treat.

A few notes of what I love about Sorcerer's Stone.
I immediately identified with each of the characters.
The mystery is as clever and ingenious as the best mysteries in literature.
The magic is seemless with reality. It seems perfectly normal.
The contrast of the wizard world and human,(muggle) world is remarkable in its uniqueness and the reactions of the characters when the two worlds meet is priceless.

Its real magic... Just sayin.

Love the book, listen to it at least once a year. I love the narrator too, except for one detail that it is too late to do anything about. When in Hermione voice, the way he has her talking is not enjoyable and the Harreeeee! Is just annoying. Distraction to an otherwise enjoyable performance.

Love the book

Jim Dale has an interesting way of narrating Harry Potter. it sometimes feels rushed. I definitely feel Stephen Fry does a better job at keeping a steady pace.

Narration feels a little rushed

I have read the physical books, loved them all. I wanted the audio versions for my drive to work. The narrator ruined this book for me. Didn't anyone bother to edit this? He pronounces names completely wrong. His interpretation of the conversations is off. I was just disappointed.

The narrator is what caused 3 stars.

I read this many years ago to my children and loved it. I think I loved it even more on audio now! Great reader and story. It's Harry Potter. Not much more to say! I am not a big fan of fantasy, but this book is a classic. So much fun!

Great book!

What made the experience of listening to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Book 1 the most enjoyable?

I was eleven when this book first debuted, and I was fortunate to 'grow up' alongside Harry in real time as the books were released. Many years later, I was driving on an extended road trip and thought, "What the heck? Why I don't listen to the Harry Potter books? I bet they'll seem silly or stupid now that I'm older." Well, that wasn't the case. Immediately, I was sucked back into Rowling's delightful world. Some parts I was surprised to find I remembered almost verbatim; other times, I was shocked at how many charming details I had forgotten but excitedly rediscovered. Is this book 'high literature'? Are the themes it presents unique and unusual? Frankly, no. I don't think Rowling has a major morality axe to grind, nor do I feel this is her strength. The world of Harry Potter is intriguing - and endearing - because it is parallel to our own, yet so magical at the same time. I finished this book in record time. My current reading list of classics and 'high literature' is being shelved for the next few weeks whilst I conjure myself back into Rowling's captivating world.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dumbledore is always delightful. He reminds me of the archetypical grandfather figure.

What does Jim Dale bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Jim Dale takes Rowling's wonderful story and gives it an entirely new dimension. I read the books when they were first published - at least twice - and thought I knew the story pretty well. Jim Dale does a marvelous job of giving each character a unique voice, and his pacing is perfect. I'm sure most folks have seen the movies, but I thought he was wise to choose unique accents for the characters which differed from their movie counterparts (aside from Hagrid). I purchased the first audiobook thinking it would kill a day of driving in the car. Well, I'm clearing my schedule as much as possible over the next few weeks, so I can devote as much time as possible to Jim Dale's other HP narrations.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, nothing extreme. Although I don't think the themes explored in this book are at all unique, Rowling doesn't go for cheap thrills or sentimentality. The magic of this book, pun intended, lays largely in its after-effects. I'm nearly 30 years old now, an entirely different person from the 11 year old who first fell in love with this book. I read a LOT of books but was surprised to find myself thinking about this book, its world and its characters long after the final page was finished.
