Publisher's Summary

The Kaul siblings battle rival clans for honor and control over an East Asia-inspired fantasy metropolis in Jade Legacy, the pause-resisting conclusion to the Green Bone Saga.

Jade, the mysterious and magical substance once exclusive to the Green Bone warriors of Kekon, is now coveted throughout the world. Everyone wants access to the supernatural abilities it provides, from traditional forces such as governments, mercenaries, and criminal kingpins, to modern players, including doctors, athletes, and movie studios. As the struggle over the control of jade grows ever larger and more deadly, the Kaul family, and the ancient ways of the Kekonese Green Bones, will never be the same.

Battered by war and tragedy, the Kauls are plagued by resentments and old wounds as their adversaries are on the ascent and their country is riven by dangerous factions and foreign interference. The clan must discern allies from enemies, set aside bloody rivalries, and make terrible sacrifices...but even the unbreakable bonds of blood and loyalty may not be enough to ensure the survival of the Green Bone clans and the nation they are sworn to protect.

A sweeping saga

True to its name, the final book in the GBS is a sweeping tale spanning more than twenty years chronicling the key events starting from the aftermath of Jade War. Fonda once again anchors us in the roots of this trilogy: family and clan politics. And we get ample doses of both. Though Anden, Wen, and Hilo showed immense development in the 2nd book, their characterizations plateau in Jade Legacy. Shae, whom I found lacking in book 2, gets an even lesser development or an arc here.

The spotlight in Jade Legacy is instead split among a larger cast, most notably the next generation Kauls. We get enough characterization to grasp the motivations and personalities of Niko, Ru, and Jaya, but I wish we had more page-time dedicated to fleshing out the intergenerational dynamics between them and Hilo-Shae-Wen.

Politics has been a central cog to this machine and Fonda spends a lot of time in setting the stage before letting it all unfold. Poetic justice is never overrated, and the way Fonda delivers her justice for certain key antagonists like Bero and Ayt Mada deserves a special mention.

The clan is my blood, and the Pillar is my master. The GBS is a series that I won't forget for a good long time to come. It has firmly cemented itself over the course of its three books as the best written speculative fantasy in my recent memory. To those who say otherwise, I offer you a clean blade.

Wonderful book

This was a fantastic finish to the trilogy. The pacing was a little slow at times, but that only served to lull you into a false sense of security when things ramp back up again.

An amazing world, compelling characters

As a long time fantasy reader, worried building is my jam. But at some point, I started to hate the tired tropes of the genre: swords, cloaks, horses, long winters, smokey taverns. Then I discovered that secondary worlds could be anything. The Green Bone Saga takes place in a world that could be our own. It's modern, with cars, phones, planes, and television. But as familiar as it is, it's completely constructed, new cultures, new countries, new wars and history, and above all jade. Jade Legacy finished the generational story of this one family of green bone warriors as they struggle with the forces of modernity. I loved living in this world for the time the books allowed.

I’m obsessed.

It’s rare for something so different to be so polished and self-aware and deep. I’m sad to be leaving Janloon behind, but I can always go back! What a world she built! I am in awe.

Complicated, Lovely Ending

This trilogy was an easy, wonderful breeze to complete. Kaycan feels like a living, breathing country full of lively and heartfelt characters that you will hate, love, and die for.

Easily the best read of 2021. This finale sticks the landing.

Worth the credit!

It’s hard to find a series that gets progressively better with each book, especially when the first book is so good. Jade Legacy was an amazing end to the trilogy.

A big disappointment

LOVED the first two, but this was a huge letdown. Kishino is great, however.

A staggering achievement

Fantastic character work. Heartbreakingly good. The Kaul family will live with me for a long, long time.

Probably the best trilogy of the last ten years.
