Publisher's summary

From New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh comes the third novel in the Horsemen Trilogy, in which a proper English lady discovers how desirable she really is after one very improper night....

Sophia Armitage does not consider herself attractive. Even her late husband treated her more as a companion than a lover when she accompanied him to war. But Sophia hopes to enjoy a Season in London as her niece makes her social debut - until, that is, her hopes are dashed when she is faced with a threat she can reveal to no one.

Then she meets Sir Nathaniel Gascoigne, an old army friend, and falls in love with him even as she must discourage his growing passion for her. Nathaniel can sense Sophia's unhappiness and fear, but does not understand that his attempts to protect and help her can only bring about her downfall....

Too long...

This book would have been a lot more enjoyable if it were about half as long as it is.
The premise of the story was not bad. However, after solving the conflict, one has to listen to 2 hours more of the heroine being an idiot and the Hero not telling her how he feels.
Resolution of the romance after solving her problem and a good epilogue would have been a nice ending. However, the conflict resolution did not occur until the last 15 minutes of the book....-(

The heroine, Sophia was a smart, but an unnecessarily obstinate woman who did not mind sleeping with the hero but did not want his help with her problem when clearly she needed it. I liked the hero better.

There is a nice secondary love story occurring concurrently which was a lot more interesting.

I would not use a credit on this book. There are better stories from this author that are far more credit worthy.

enjoyed!

I enjoyed this story a lot. Love Rosalyn Landor. I am a long time fan of Mary Balogh. Interesting characters. Did find Nat a bit tedious...only in the fact he was so reluctant to admit he was in love. So glad the villain got his due. Felt for Sophie so much. I recommend.

Finally! The last book of the "Horsemen"!

I have owned this book in print for quite some time. I have always wanted to get this one through Audible and it always said unavailable. I was so surprised to finally see it here, and that it was read by the incomparable Rosalyn Landor, that I bypassed her newer story, (Westcox), for this one.

Nathaniel was always my favorite of the horsemen because he always seemed to be the steady one of the bunch, and I loved how he and Sophie come together. He brought Sophie out of her quiet existence with a slow, steady love that grew between the two. Granted, it started as just an affair between two friends, but it did change over time.

Yes, as always the heroin makes me a little angry with her because she lets the villain of the story walk all over her when she had four very capable men to act as her hero, (Why authors feel they have to make women so weak and silly I'll never know), but of course she does. The four horsemen come to her rescue, but it's Nathaniel who is really there to bring her home safely because he loves her.

For me I was glad Nat was the one who fell for her. She suited him in every way and that's what made me love this book the most! So happy to be able to add the audio to my collection!

Give 5 stars for the horsemen!

Tantalizing Love Story!

This is a wonderful story of romance, deep emotions, and true friendship. Mary Balogh gives her characters such depth of feelings that they are truly realistic. Rosalyn Landor gives the characters such vibrant life with her suburb narration that you feel like you are with them and part of the group. I highly recommend this book.

All of Mary’s books are soo freakin good lol. All the 3 books in this series had dogs. Lol and dogs make stories better lol. All of her books are emotional and funny. I cried every time. I’m always soooo sad when I finish a series because I don’t want it to end. But thank God she has written a lot !!

What a wonderful story. I wondered why the Four Horseman was a a trilogy, what gentleman was going to be left unattached? I wish there were going to be more books yo this series, I’m sorry that it has ended.

So glad Sophia got her happy ending

Sophia is a character you can't help but cheer for. It was so fun to see her get her happy ending. It was also satisfying to see Nathaniel fall in love. But perhaps one of the best things about this novel was the bonus secondary story. Basically, you get 2 or 3 stories in one. Mary Balogh has created a cast of supporting characters that are multi-dimensional in their own right. You get just as invested in their story as you do in Sophia and Nathaniel's. And Rosalyn Landor is easily one of the best narrators on Audible.

Good end of series

Though there are four "horsemen of the apocalypse", the first two get their own story and last two have to share.
However, this is a better solution than ruining the series.
So all the major characters play prominent roles and the secondary characters pop up, with few new ones.
It is better to read all three stories in order, they can be read separately, but vital sub-plots are missed.

Tortured and tortuous

Rosalind Landor reads well but the heroine is ridiculously stupid and neither she nor the hero ever say the right thing at the right time. The nub of the plot is believable to a degree but the way it was handled by the heroine is not. For a supposedly independent, mature woman, she displayed the emotional maturity of a silly schoolgirl.

Fabulous!

I loved this story in particular in the Horsemen trilogy. They’re all good but this one really captured my imagination. Loved the interplay of characters and the extra love story between Eden and Lavinia. The characters were represented truthfully and developed well. None of the frustrations of other stories. This one is my particular favourite. About to listen again!

Great Story and Fantastic Narratit

Loved this book and the wonderful Rosalyn Landor as the narrator. I also enjoyed the secondary romance between Lavinia and Eden. I would have loved an extra epilogue to see how they had progressed in their marriages.
