Just a history overview

If you want an overview of the history of Ireland from the Mesolithic to the 20th century, plus some mythology, this is fine. Although the summary says "venture down the rabbit hole," in this case it does not mean getting into details. Sometimes events, people, or places are simply mentioned and left without any explanation whatsoever. If you are looking to learn about the early history (and social structures, culture, system of laws, etc.) before the arrival of the Vikings in 795 AD then this book is pretty bare bones. After listening to the Sister Fidelma historical fiction books and from what I've gleaned from Early Medieval, in-depth, scholarly dives of books like Jennifer Paxton's "England: From the Fall of Rome to the Norman Conquest," Tim Clarkson's "Æthelflæd: The Lady of the Mercians" and "The Picts: A History," and Max Adams' "The King in the North: The Life and Times of Oswald of Northumbria," there is a lot more we do know and can infer from historical texts and archaeology than what is indicated in this book. I have been looking for and have not yet found on Audible that type of scholarly exploration of early Irish history - ahem, Audible, you have a hole in your library.

The book did redeem itself a little in the last seven minutes of the last chapter (before the conclusion), which discussed what Irish mythology can possibly reveal about the arrival of early peoples in Ireland.
Furthermore, I do not know much about modern Irish history and I did learn more about the 17th-19th centuries, which were more complex than I realized; so in that regard, this historical overview was informative.

A good history

A well told history of Ireland. Not too difficult to listen to if you have an interest in Ireland history. Narration was good with the appropriate accent. I am sure it helped pronounce many of the names.
