Publisher's Summary

In 1860s Montana Territory, Kate Beecher, a young woman from Boston, faces the hardships and hard choices of life on the frontier. Just 18 and quietly struggling against the social constraints of the era, Kate meets a woman who fires first her imagination and then her dreams. Jessie Forbes, a fiercely independent rancher, finds in Kate the passion she never knew she had been missing. This is the story of their struggle to love in a land, and time, as cruel as it was beautiful.

Good Story Bad Narration

What did you love best about Innocent Hearts?

The Story. The way that Jessie and Kate discovered their love for each other

What other book might you compare Innocent Hearts to and why?

There are some very good lesbian westerns, but not many in audio.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Just plain bad.

If you could rename Innocent Hearts, what would you call it?

Love In New Hope

Any additional comments?

It would be nice if there were more of this type in audio. From what I've seen, there aren't that many.

Narrator

Couldn't get past the narrator... And I realized historical fiction isn't my cup of tea

Disappointed in Narrator

This is one of my favorite love stories by Radclyffe because the Love is so innocent. In addition, I'm a sucker for westerns & the history. However I was sorely disappointed in the narrator. I felt she rushed through the reading & didn't really capture or demonstrate the true love of this story or the characters. Her reading really missed the emotion going on. I'm sure if she slowed down maybe it would've been different. Hopefully she don't read Promising Hearts. I recommend you read the ebook to really capture this love story.

Lacking in depth

I enjoy a good romance story. This had great potential. It would have been nice to find out more about the characters and more about other encounters they had along the way. Maybe even more about them traveling west.

I love westerns

I loved the story, the characters where well rounded. But the Narrator was terrible! Her monotone voice and poor inflections were terrible!!!!
If it had a good narrator the story would have been fantastic!

Certainly not Radclyffe’s best. Lanky narration.

Radclyffe is one of my favorite writers of all time, with Claire McNab, Katherine Kallmaker and Gerry Hill, and a few more but this book is definitely not one of her best. It feels as if the end is not an end. Characters are barely credible.

The work of the narrator is lame and all her characters speak with the same pitch, drawl, rhythm and intonation. This is definitely the last audiobook I buy with her as a narrator.
I’m sorry to say that this audio book is not worth my time or money.

Cute Storyline

This was a cute story and i would have enjoyed it much more with a better narration of the story. The narrator had a nice voice actually and the hardest parts was her trying for a husky tone when she played the parts of Jesse and May. also the parts of the mom and dad were hard to listen to as well. The best voices in this book is Kate and when the narration was being done. You coukd hear with ease that it was her natural voice. The made up voices was a great effort but just not well enough crafted. I was unable to finish the audible book if this story but please remember, it is a cute story with a narrator who tried very hard, I am sure she is amazing now since years have passed.

Great story

i found this to be an interesting audiobook. i loved the story and found the characters to be believable. the narration was good however the voice of jessie could of been a bit better. it was to similar to the mens and a bit breathy. Kates voice was good as well as the other women. I think the narrator did a good job with the accuracy of the time period.
all in all its worth buying.

Awful Narration - Great Story

Another great story by Radclyffe! I enjoy western themed stories, that era creates a whole new dimension to what it must have been like to be a lesbian way back when. However, I was terribly disappointed in the narration. The reading was rushed, the narrator sounded out of breath, and the tone sounded like the female narrator was attempting to reflect a male voice a female character??? I was able get past the narration and very much enjoyed the story!

I love reading this book but....

What did you like most about Innocent Hearts?

It is one of my favourite old Radclyffe books, a simple love story with likeable characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Innocent Hearts?

I enjoy the variety of characters in this story and the possibility for a sequel (please post it soon!)

Would you be willing to try another one of Shawn Marie Bryan’s performances?

Unfortunately the performance really ruined this for me. The voice for male characters and the lead woman were as deep as each other. The accent for the time and setting was quite annoying at times.

Great but rough around the edges

There are some problems with this , I think it was originally written in 2002, so its possibly a early work of Radclyffe's. There are some point of view issues, and the dialogue is not as slick as later works of hers. There is also a believibilty issue in terms of acceptance of the relationship between Jessie and Kate, from Kate's parents given the era in which this is set.

All that being said this is a great story. I like this type if adventure story and romance (rather then crime and romance), and I like how the relationship develops between the characters. The narrator does good job, but for a few places where pace was too fast in the narrative and too slow in Jessie's dialogue (I understand its western accent, but did not quite work to me, but this could me my ear.)

I did enjoy this work enjoyed this work, And might be one of the few I might listen to again.

Nice

Brilliant book and a great story.
Sad in places but the underlying warmth is really worth your time. I enjoyed the MC characters and their own story's. Narrator was nice 😉
