Publisher's summary

The foundational and wildly popular go-to resource for influence and persuasion—a renowned international bestseller, with over 5 million copies sold—now revised, adding: new research, new insights, new examples, and online applications.

In the new edition of this highly acclaimed bestseller, Robert Cialdini—New York Times bestselling author of Pre-Suasion and the seminal expert in the fields of influence and persuasion—explains the psychology of why people say yes and how to apply these insights ethically in business and everyday settings. Using memorable stories and relatable examples, Cialdini makes this crucially important subject surprisingly easy. With Cialdini as a guide, you don't have to be a scientist to learn how to use this science.

You'll learn Cialdini's Universal Principles of Influence, including new research and new uses so you can become an even more skilled persuader—and just as importantly, you'll learn how to defend yourself against unethical influence attempts. You may think you know these principles, but without understanding their intricacies, you may be ceding their power to someone else.

Cialdini's Principles of Persuasion:

  • Reciprocation
  • Commitment and Consistency
  • Social Proof
  • Liking
  • Authority
  • Scarcity
  • Unity, the newest principle for this edition

Understanding and applying the principles ethically is cost-free and deceptively easy. Backed by Dr. Cialdini's 35 years of evidence-based, peer-reviewed scientific research—including a three-year field study on what leads people to change—Influence is a comprehensive guide to using these principles to move others in your direction.

Sales professions & consumers should read this

I love this book because it was such an exceptional upgrade to the original. I especially like the fact that Chaldini focused on something I don't recall from the last book. He details defense against manipulative influence tactics. And makes a very clear moral stand as to how we should behave in terms of basically crushing unethical use of these techniques.

Very insightful

The subject matter seems very well researched and thoroughly presented, perhaps to the point of being redundant at times. I certainly feel after reading it I'm better equipped at identifying how I'm being influenced. The author does an OK job of reading his own material but I imagine a professional voice talent could make it more engaging.

Open my eyes

This was a highly recommended book so I dove in. While it is pretty dry overall it definitely reveals great insight based on research. It really opened my eyes to our inner workings and levers of influence.

I must read for all that negotiate. Everyone!

I have read the book (the first edition) twice, and now am reading the updated edition and am listening to it on audible as I go through it. I have found my negotiation, sales and marketing skills have greatly enhanced. I have also found that I am much less likely to fall victim to these tactics.

long but worth it!

Started using the concepts immediately. And felt bad about all the money I've waisted over the years.

Enjoyed the book from A to Z!

I really enjoyed this book, packed with value and great advice! I would recommend taking notes after each chapter, as there is so much information, easy to forget and get lost otherwise. Highly recommend!

Great for all aspects of life

If you’re alive, the information in this book will help make the life you live that much better.

On the principle of authority, I’m a personal trainer and have been working with people for over 17 years. My job is essentially to get people excited about things they aren’t really interested in doing. The information in this book will make that job easier.

On the principle of unity, we are all subject to outside influences. I imagine a world where we are all armed with knowledge that guides our actions toward each other to be supportive and affirming instead of malicious and self-serving. If we were all taught these principles in school, the world would be a much better place. It would be safer to “click and run.”
