For Ash Woods, practicing alchemy is a crime.

Only an elite few are legally permitted to study the science of magic—so when Ash is rejected by Lancaster College of Alchemic Science, he takes a job as the school’s groundskeeper instead, forced to learn alchemy in secret.

When he’s discovered by the condescending and brilliant apprentice Ramsay Thorne, Ash is sure he's about to be arrested—but instead of calling the reds, Ramsay surprises Ash by making him an offer: Ramsay will keep Ash's secret if he helps her find the legendary Book of Source, a sacred text that gives its reader extraordinary power.

As Ash and Ramsay work together and their feelings for each other grow, Ash discovers their mission is more dangerous than he imagined, pitting them against influential and powerful alchemists—Ash’s estranged father included. Ash’s journey takes him through the cities and wilds across New Anglia, forcing him to discover his own definition of true power and how far he and other alchemists will go to seize it.

Featuring trans, queer, and polyamorous characters of color, Infinity Alchemist is the hugely anticipated young adult fantasy debut from the extraordinary author of Felix Ever After, King and the Dragonflies, Queen of the Conquered and more.

<p>"Callender builds a rich environment that echoes real-world injustices...political intrigue, a fascinating magic system, and heart-pounding action propel the plot and, combined with Ash’s unfurling relationships with Ramsay and the rest of the supporting cast, result in a refreshingly affirming and tender standout fantasy." —<i>Publishers Weekly, s</i>tarred review<br><br>"Featuring a cast of queer and trans characters entangled in a gorgeous romance, <i>Infinity Alchemist</i> is a thrilling, expansive adventure and a bold exploration of family lost and found." —Elana K. really loved the characters and felt the narrator did a good job bringing them to life

Great story and narration

5 stars all across the board for this beyond amazing novel. Such a special work to me, the fantasy genre has always been white and dull but in infinity alchemist there’s colour and fun and an enjoyable story throughout. (Give Ash a break though). Definitely one of my favourite books of all time can’t wait to read the next one.

An underrated fantasy

A good premise. Promising narrator. Unfortunately, it is WAY too emotionally in depth for my taste. If you are into teen/young adult angst; this book is for you. The thought put into the theretical alchemy sections is well thought out and enjoyable. The author puts more touchy feely into the action section causing them to lose their appeal. Hopefully you will enjoy it more than I did. I couldn't continue after the first third and ceased reading.

A Base Hit

I’m not quite sure why this book didn’t immediately grab me. The premise was interesting, and I loved the gender diversity! Maybe it was that I could never quite connect with Ash. Could be that I’m quite a bit older and couldn’t really relate to a lot of his struggles. And I think his personality is quite different than mine, so I never truly connected with him.

The story was entertaining enough, especially at the end, when things got really exciting. The way alchemy was presented was pretty good. It was fairly coherent and consistent. There was some inconsistency with the societal attitudes towards alchemy, though. Several times characters made reference to how alchemy was evil and against the law, but there was at least one whole college dedicated to creating licensed alchemists. Definitely there were those who were against it, but clearly it was an accepted part of society.

And there were times when the author spent a little too much time explaining things, like polyamory. But maybe for those new to the concept it was necessary. In general, I’m glad to see such a positive depiction of it!

I think that teens and young adults would really like this book! And I’d definitely recommend it for them. Not sure how many adults would love it, though. But it was still fairly enjoyable. Might take a break before I read the next one. Have to decide if I want to.

The narrator was decent. A little bit nasal, but I got used to it. He did a pretty good job differentiating between characters. Maybe could have pushed those differences a bit more, though.

Pretty good but not great - recommend for teens!
