Publisher's Summary

Take a chance.

Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin doesn’t trust easily, and he most certainly doesn’t trust spies. He’ll work with them if ordered to, but that doesn’t mean he has to like it. Except Agent Sean Delaney is proving to be the exception to the rule. There’s something about Sean that gets under Alexei’s skin and won’t let go. Alexei would be lying if he said he wasn’t interested in what lay beneath the agent’s mask. When they’re assigned together for a mission, Alexei vows to keep Sean safe all while trying to coax the hot agent into his bed.

Hold onto hope.

Agent Sean Delaney has spent his entire adult life living a lie for his country. When the MDF tasks him with finding evidence of criminal wrong-doing against the owner of a private military company, Sean knows exactly how to play the game to get what he wants. He just doesn’t know how to handle Alexei’s advances, nor his own attraction to the younger soldier. Being a spy is lonely work, and Sean knows he should keep his distance, but saying no to Alexei is impossible from the moment they first kiss.

In a world of lies, the truth can be deadly.

When the mission takes a turn for the worse, the only thing left to do is run. In the wake of betrayal, and in the path of danger, can their fragile trust survive the battle?

In the Shadows is a steamy gay sci-fi military romance with a HFN ending that skirts HEA. There is military violence within the story that may not be suitable for everyone, as well as explicit intimate scenes not suitable for listeners under the age of 18. This is a direct sequel to In the Ruins and listening to the previous audiobooks in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

WOW!!!

Alexei and Sean do not have a cute meet or even cutsy moments in the beginning of their relationship but it is more impact with how they interact with each other and develop their own relationship amid the chaos and betrayals. This is action packed and will leave you wondering what happened as they forge their own way through everything standing in their way.

Make a note: you really should read the first two books to get all the details of Alexei and Sean as well as a true understanding of the world that is build here.

Great series

This is the third book in the Metahuman Files series by Hailey Turner and narrated superbly by Greg Boudreaux. The story revolves around Metahumans who are the survivors of terrorist attacking using a chemical known as splice. The survivors gain powers which when applied in a military division become incredibly useful. The first two books in the series focused on Jamie and Kyle but this book focused on two other characters allowing the reader to learn more about the others in the group.

Really love Greg Boudreaux and his ability to provide distinct voices to each character. He is performing the book and not simply reading it aloud like many narrators tend to do.

OMG! I need the next one, amazing!

Hailey Turner's writing is so damn amazing! I don't know why I waited so long to read/listen to this series!! There is just so much action that's written with such careful and amazing detail, I feel like I am there witnessing everything go on. I feel like I'm there. This team is truly an alpha team so professional and poised and on it. I loved that this book focused on Alexei, I really wanted to hear his side of the story and his life, though I did miss Kyle and Jamie haha.
Sean and Alexei are super cute and Sean helps bring this story closer to the enemy. The action in this book had me on edge, the emotional side and action side were both amazing.

Greg Boudreaux does an amazing job changing his voice for the characters, I do have to say that his voice for Alexei is one of my favorites!

Great book!

This is an exciting installment in the awesome Metahuman Files series. Alexei and Sean finally get together, and they're sexy and surprisingly funny together. Alexei is cocky as always, but he is also protective and witty. Sean deals with the guilt over lying to his family for years, and he is basically alone and lonely until the sexy Russian sets his sights on him. I am so glad they don't have a lot of unnecessary angst in their relationship, because there's plenty of drama in Sean and Alpha Team's latest mission.
Along with a terrific storyline, we have the fantastic performance of a narrator who always takes a great book to an even higher level. I am loving this series and have already recommended it to friends.

books now to get myself up to date on this great series. The narrator did an excellent job.

Action-packed!

Agent Sean Delaney and Staff Sargeant Alexei Dvorkin come together in this fast-paced HFN thriller where they fight against domestic enemies intent on causing havoc by creating a metahuman capable of defeating the MDF forces working to keep peace in the US and, when so tasked, in the world. Sean and Alexei are working undercover on a case when their cover is blown and the resultant investigation into how it happened leads to the discovery of a connection between a top CIA leader and the Sons of Adam, the homegrown terrorist group that the MDF has been fighting against since its inception. They must race to protect Sean's family, and then deploy to infiltrate and contain the trouble brewing as a result of their discovery of the new threat. And in between it all, they must find a place of trust, which they do, until their chemistry ignites into powerfully satisfying lovemaking. I can't give this story five stars because I found the development of their relationship to be quite stodgy, stilted, jerky, not smooth or organic. I couldn't believe it the first time they made love in Alexei's apartment. I kept going back to try and figure out where they had crossed the line from colleagues to friends to get to this point. And the other two times in between the action, when they got together, the switch from action and drama to steamy sex scene was awkward at best. And finally, the narrator's performance was fine, except that too often he missed making the right emphasis on a word that was pivotal to the meaning of the sentence he was reading and thus to the significance of the moment in the scene. He gets four stars for his great work on accents as well as his ability to distinguish between male and female tones. So, overall, four stars.

All the stars for Alexei and Sean!

Overall: 5+ Stars!

This is the kind of book that you want to give all the stars to. From the fantastic characters (main and secondary) that I've been following since book 1 to the excellent world-building Hailey Turner has me used to, you just can't go wrong with this book. You need to read or better yet, listen to the first two before In the Shadows, but I promise you won't regret it.

Alexei was absolutely swoon-worthy and it was great learning more about Sean in this installment. The two of them had amazing chemistry and damn if they didn't raise the temp a few notches with those passionate, intense sex scenes. *fans self*

I've loved to see the team working together since the first book, and that didn't change here. The cases they were working on were intriguing and overall, the book was fast-paced and captivating and filled with great action scenes and a story, that while I can't call lovey-dovey, was the perfect foundation for Alexei and Sean's relationship and made me eager to see what else Ms. Turner has in store for us in the future.

Greg Boudreaux did a fantastic job with this book, giving each of the characters distinct voices and bringing them all to life for me, although my favorite was Alexei. I don't know how he did it, but Greg managed to somehow make this book even better with his narration. You don't want to miss out on this one, or any of the previous books in the series.

Undercover lives of metahumans...hot!

So when Agent Sean Delaney runs into problems during an undercover op, it's up to Alexei and his Alpha team to save the day. These metahumans all have different abilities and specialities, so they work well together when Sean is seconded to the team in order to bring down a criminal with family ties to a Casino mogul.
Alexei and Sean seem to work well together both on and off the job, so when things heat up and the team comes to their aid, things go boom around them.
I really enjoyed all the intrigue and action...what a car chase! There is plenty to entertain and enthral with some hot man on man loving thrown in for good measure. Highly recommended for all fans of fantasy/sci-fi paranormal action-adventure MM romance and of the Metahuman Files/Hailey Turner in particular.
Greg Boudreaux is spectacular as always in bringing these characters to life and making us live the story along with them.

The plot twists just keep coming, which kept me interested right to the the end. The relationship unfolded well and the balance between romance and heat was good. Greg Boudreaux's narration was in point as always. I love this world.

Metahuman Files goes from strength to strength!

In the Shadows is the third instalment of the Metahuman Files by Hailey Turner and is just as thrilling, sexy and action packed as the previous two.
The authors ability to world build is fantastic and her character and plot development complex and varied.
In this book we have Kyle's adoptive brother, Russian Alexei, who has pyrotechnic powers and ex-CIA agent Sean who is used to working alone. They find themselves on a mission and having to get up close and personal.
Jamie and Kyle make numerous appearances as do all the other well known characters.
The story has plenty of action/fighting scenes which are so detailed I felt like I was actually watching it at the movies, including a car chase that actually had me holding my breath and my heart beating faster!
Greg Boudreaux as always was perfection itself in his narration. He can talk to me in Russian anytime 😉
