“Anyone who loves my work should love hers.”—Christine Feehan

“If you have yet to add Liu to your must-read list, you’re doing yourself a disservice.”—Booklist

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Marjorie M. Liu has captivated readers with her remarkable Dirk and Steele novels, proving herself to be one of today’s most brilliantly imaginative creators of paranormal romance. Lui reaches new heights with In the Dark of Dreams, the breathtakingly sensual story of a young woman’s passionate reunion with a magnificent man from the sea—and the dark mission that binds them both.

“They tried to take my dreams”
This installment is bittersweet; it’s very much a star-crossed lover story. Two people, both estranged from their families, floating aimlessly, sensing there’s something more. It’s a bit of a flipped Little Mermaid script as Perin is the merman and Jenny the human from a special family.

“We dream again”
The series arc about the Consortium connects oddly here, with a heretofore unmentioned third faction. The involvement of all of these factions felt haphazard, as if randomly brought in to push the story along and then abandoned for no coherent reason. The appearances of some of the Dirk and Steele team was likewise clunky, with two minute scenes involving Roland or Serena. Only dolphin shifter Rick has a meatier role here.

Despite the loose ends, this delivered a unique tale with unique mythologies and a haunting love story.
It may not have been my favorite in the series, but it was still a solid listen.
