Story
Christy Barnett is sleeping when her aging German shepherd Molly growls into the darkness outside her bedroom. She wakes to a dim glow provided by her Kindle's screen, thankful that she had fallen asleep while reading again. The power has gone out, the world outside her window is eerily dark and silent. And Molly is weary of something that waits in the hallway, hiding in the shadows. A dark cloud has fallen over the city of Aberdeen, MD. The population disappears in an instant.

A thousand years ago, something evil made a bold attempt to cross into this world. Now it's ready to try again. She's eternally young, lovely, and lethal. Story
Mankind in its present state has been around for a quarter of a million years, yet only the last 4,000 have been of any significance. So, what did we do for nearly 250,000 years? We huddled in caves and around small fires, fearful of the things that we didn't understand. It was more than explaining why the sun came up; it was the mystery of enormous birds with heads of men and rocks that came to life. So we called them "gods" and "demons", begged them to spare us, and prayed for salvation.

Story
In this science fiction satire of westerns, after the American West was destroyed in a series of biological disasters, rebuilding it is a lot like building it in the first place, but there are crucial differences. For example, new, partly mechanical cattle with computer brains are called steerites. They speak and sing a lot more than the original steers. Most of the cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen are partly mechanical, too, except for those few humans called control-naturals. That group has to keep all their original equipment, just like the original cowboys.

This is Intense
From the start I was hooked. The very beginning scene set a path that I wanted to go down and needed to know the intricacies that would unfold during the journey Andy Kaiser takes us down. Carnies and faux Indian caves and a trailer park boy made this story super exciting.
I hated Dario, he is a hot head just like his father and did everything wrong, which I loved and made the story what it is. Watching him go through his struggle of not being his father, yet still being him was awesome. His denial is a self reflection of many people. I struggled with the advice he got from Arielle as I think she meant well but was also driving him to be more reckless in is endeavor. All in all I loved all the characters and their descriptions. I felt like I was there witnessing them first-hand.
The overall story is crazy, and while simple, is complicated by many aspects. Three word description would be circus, revenge, misguided. Doesn't tell the story but will to those who listen. Definitely a good story that I was a bit apprehensive from the description, but not one I could put down. The in-depth telling of everything hooked me and creeped me out at the same time. Will never play carnie games again. I enjoyed it and look forward to more from this author.
I really enjoyed the narration. I felt Ryan Francona was spot on for the character voices and provided the right cadence and energy for them. While the story was great, the narration keeps you glued to your headphones.

Unique and fun story
The beginning of the story I wasn't sure about the narrator choices, some of the voices seemed younger than they should. As the story progressed it was much better and the narrator did a great job. I didn't care so much for the MC but that was overshadowed in the best possible way by how unique and entertaining the story is.
