Story
Psilocybin mushrooms are called magic for a reason. The powerful and therapeutic effect of psilocybin has been scientifically proven and even used for successful treating of chronic diseases such as cancer and various cardiovascular problems. Magic mushrooms have been presented badly in the media these last few years, mainly because they can be used as a hallucinogenic drug. Don’t let the fact that people misuse these mushrooms discourage you.

Story
Fungi can appear anywhere, from desert dunes to frozen tundra. They can invade our bodies and live between our toes or our floorboards. They are unwelcome intruders or vastly expensive treats, and symbols of both death and eternal life. But despite their familiar presence, there’s still much to learn about the eruption, growth, and decay of their secret interconnected world. From fields, feasts, and fairy rings to death caps, puffballs, and ambrosia beetles, this is an intoxicating journey into the life of an extraordinary organism, one that we have barely begun to understand.

When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.

Matsutake is the most valuable mushroom in the world - and a weed that grows in human-disturbed forests across the northern hemisphere. Through its ability to nurture trees, matsutake helps forests to grow in daunting places. It is also an edible delicacy in Japan, where it sometimes commands astronomical prices. In all its contradictions, matsutake offers insights into areas far beyond just mushrooms and addresses a crucial question: what manages to live in the ruins we have made?

Terence McKenna hypothesizes that as the North African jungles receded, giving way to savannas and grasslands near the end of the most recent ice age, a branch of our arboreal primate ancestors left the forest canopy and began living in the open areas beyond. There they experimented with new varieties of foods as they adapted, physically and mentally, to the environment. Among the new foods found in this environment were psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

Over the last decade, I have learned the craft of turning mycelium into mushrooms and have developed into an experienced mushroom cultivator. When I first started growing mushrooms at home, the process appeared very daunting for a beginner, and I found myself purchasing books and reading extensively to try to get a better understanding of it all.

Although mammals and birds are widely regarded as the smartest creatures on earth, it has lately become clear that a very distant branch of the tree of life has also sprouted higher intelligence: the cephalopods, consisting of the squid, the cuttlefish, and above all the octopus. In captivity, octopuses have been known to identify individual human keepers, raid neighboring tanks for food, turn off lightbulbs by spouting jets of water, plug drains, and make daring escapes.

We live in a world of seeds. From our morning toast to the cotton in our clothes, they are quite literally the stuff and staff of life, supporting diets, economies, and civilizations around the globe. Just as the search for nutmeg and the humble peppercorn drove the Age of Discovery, so did coffee beans help fuel the Enlightenment and cottonseed help spark the Industrial Revolution. And from the fall of Rome to the Arab Spring, the fate of nations continues to hinge on the seeds of a Middle Eastern grass known as wheat.

Publisher's Summary
From ecology to fermentation, in pop culture and in medicine - mushrooms are everywhere and In Search of Mycotopia is a listener's expert guide through the weird, wonderful world of fungi and the amazing modern mycological movement.
The book introduces us to an incredible, essential, and oft-overlooked kingdom of life - fungi - and all the potential it holds for our future, through the work and research being done by an unforgettable community of mushroom-mad citizen scientists and microbe devotees. This entertaining and mind-expanding journey will captivate listeners who are curious about the hidden worlds and networks that make up our planet.
Author Doug Bierend uncovers a vanguard of mycologists; growers, independent researchers, ecologists, entrepreneurs, and amateur enthusiasts exploring and advocating for fungi’s capacity to improve and heal. From decontaminating landscapes and waterways to achieving food security, In Search of Mycotopia demonstrates how humans can work with fungi to better live with nature—and with one another.

Very informative but with some additional caveats
First off, I'm incredibly impressed with the author's dedication to detail on all things fungi. This book goes over many broad topics related to mycology with a surprisingly technical, fined tooth comb: the science, the politics, the economies, the social aspects, and more. My only critique is that when it comes to the social aspects of more mycology movements, it does seem that the author seems to go on tangents on some (not all) social justice causes that have emerged in the modern mycology world. In today's polarizing climate (at least in The States) I can understand the urge to discuss these, and I respect the attempt. It's just that when the author does, I can't help but perceive this book diverging from an informational or non-biased dialogue to a somewhat biased one. Of course, this observation is ultimately an individual one and thus the responsibility of each reader (or listener) to determine. still, for myself there were two chapters that I had to fast forward through because I simply didn't believe them to be of any informational worth. however, I don't want to end my review on a critical note. overall, I'm very glad I bought this and listened. I've been stooped in the world of fungi for a bit over 6 years now and yet I learned a lot from this book and I'm deeply appreciative. I hope the author continues to publish more work. 4.5 out of 5.

The Mushroom Book I’ve Been Waiting For
As a devout Mycology enthusiast, I’ve read the majority of mushroom books on this app, and many beyond that. Many of them are beautiful, describe interesting scientific data, and catalogue mycological subcultures. Of all of them, I’ve found this one the most inspiring. If you’re curious about the cultural moment that mushrooms are having, or just wonder what that weird green-haired person kneeling on the ground at the park is doing (hi that’s me), read this book!

Well worth a listen - but occasionally dreary..
The subject-matter is fascinating, & need-to-know for everyone, but the (perhaps partly would-be) sensibilities of the author drag this book down. A theme that is returned to again, and again (& again, & again..), is the correlation of wonderful bio-diversity and wonderful societal diversity. This flabby metaphor does not work at either end - who wants either more pathogenic varieties or greater diversity in racist tropes? Granted, the accent in his metaphor is on cooperation, but criminal gangs also cooperate. More deeply, no biological metaphor is a good one for understanding human behavior, since no mechanistic metaphor can capture the choices of a free will. It is exactly our ability to rise above our conceptions of our biological natures that allows us to do better than Trumpian 'grabbing women by..'
If we think of ourselves as machines, biological or otherwise, we deny responsibility for our actions - or 'bad bulldozer, naughty nuke'?
Still, he conveys important and useful information in an affable enough way.
Well worth a listen.
