In 1994, Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson were brutally murdered at her home in Brentwood, California. O. J. Simpson was tried for the crime in a case that captured the attention of the American people, but he was ultimately found not guilty of criminal charges. The victims' families brought civil cases against Simpson, in which he was found liable for willfully and wrongfully causing the deaths of Ron and Nicole by committing battery with malice and oppression.

In 2006, HarperCollins announced the publication of a book in which O. J. Simpson told how he hypothetically would have committed the murders. In response to public outrage that Simpson stood to profit from these crimes, HarperCollins canceled the book. A Florida bankruptcy court awarded the rights to the Goldmans in August 2007 to partially satisfy the unpaid civil judgment, which has risen, with interest, to over $38 million.

The Goldman family views this book as Simpson's confession, and has worked hard to ensure that the public will read or listen to this book and learn the truth. This audiobook was produced from the original manuscript approved by O. J. Simpson, with additional insight from the Goldman Family, Pablo F. Fenjves, and Dominick Dunne.

True OJ

First I applaude the Goldman family for making sure OJ didn't profit from this very slanted version of what happened in Brentwood California in 1994. He isn't someone prone to taking the blame for his own actions and tried to direct all the problems in their relationship to her door. It's funny how innocent he still wants everyone to think he is, even after admitting he killed them both. Its the classic, she sleeps around she's an unfit mother, he sleeps around and he is a handsome stud. He made fun of Nicole for needing to understand herself and he states rather proudly how all eyes are riveted on him as he enters a room. The guy's ego is almost unbelievable. I think this part of his personality makes all the pieces fall in place. Someone with an ego like his would find it hard to allow Nicole to walk away. Someone with his ego wouldn't want to loose the adulation of the public by going to jail so he puts a gun to his head and goes on a slow Bronco ride as people line up and cheer him on. Seeing signs urging him to run probably made him think, hey, I just might get away with this. And only someone with the EGO of OJ would think he could write a book and make everyone believe he was this great guy who did everything for his family and was somehow forced to kill his ex-wife and an innocent young man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Outstanding narration! Guy sounded just like OJ.

I had a new opinion after this read.

I have always believed the OJ was guilty however I now truly believe that he was out of his mind when he committed this crime. I do not believe he should be free to roam. In the moment he did what he always did when he didn't get his way... he threw a tantrum. Unfortunately this time weapons were involved and he went way too far. Unfortunately poor Ron was genuinely in the wrong place at the wrong time. His character shines through in the fact that he would not leave a friend in need. So so many victims in that single moment.

An interesting recollection of an imagined vision.

“If I Did It” is a controversial book, but I found it to be a fascinating read. I was interested in hearing O.J.’s own account of the murders of Nicole and Ron, even if these were simply hypothetical accounts. Details came up that I was not aware of previously regarding the couple’s relationship, friendships, travels, inferred drug use, and physical altercations. I also found the chapter on the murders to be quite chilling, as Simpson described in graphic detail how he could have killed the two victims.

It was apparent that O.J. Was also trying to establish a credible argument that he was out of his right mind during the murders. Introducing a fictitious character, descriptions of feeling “blacked out” and “not in control” of his actions, all play directly into this appeal for empathy towards him. Whether or not you believe Simpson’s account, the book is great read that provides a glimpse into the mind of a murderer.

A view of the inner workings of a narcissist

In this book OJ Simpson describes how he confronted and killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman while also proclaiming his innocence. If you’ve ever had the misfortune of having a narcissist in your life you’ll easily recognize OJ’s pathology. Please be safe out there everyone.

Narcissism and plausible deniability

The prologue gave great insight to the ghostwriter and his interactions with Simpson, even the time spent during his testimony. The inflections of voice during the story felt accurate. The transcripts of recordings throughout the book provided great insight. The phantom character Charlie, we believe, is Simpson's alter ego or conscience. Unfortunately Simpson has an astonishing ability to fabricate his "truths". He paints a mural of their failed marriage being Nicole's fault. Her two-faced addict tendencies lead her to blame everyone except herself. Of course this book is a "confession". Simpson alludes the fateful night to be a very bad nightmare to which he wishes he could wake up from. It is easy to lie to yourself when you're the only one correct in your world. Finally OJ gets to tell his side of the story which was "always" overlooked by the media. To find out who "did it" you'll have to listen in. This audiable was great for a road trip listen. Needless to say we won't be drinking orange juice anytime soon.

OJ is a Narcissist

This story was confirmation of OJs classic narcissistic persona. So sorry for the wreckage he created for his family and the Goldmans.

What did you love best about If I Did It?

It was so eerie to hear from OJ Simpson in first person, talking about what he was thinking when he murdered Nicole Brown Simpson. So sad that Ronald Goldman died too.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I had heard another audible story by Grover Gardner, but not any of the other narrators. I think they all did a good job. I always like it when people narrate their own words.

If you could give If I Did It a new subtitle, what would it be?

I think it would be helpful if the subtitle contained OJ Simpson’s name.

Excruciating

It was incredibly excruciating having to listen to this murderer malign people and portray himself as some sort of saint. Most of what he states as "what really happened" has already been proven and documented as a lie. Not only delusional but a textbook narcissistic psychopath. Too much.

Simpson is a killer

This book was entertaining. But listening to the part that was written by OJ, what a joke. Most of what he said is probably lies. For him to say Nicole came to him and said she was sorry and after she went to counseling and realized that the divorce was her fault? That’s literally never the case. Divorce is a two way street. He’s an abusive man, as much as he denied that, I know he abused her.
He is just a compulsive liar. And poor Ron Goldman, innocent man murdered by an evil person. Simpson is nothing but a narcissist who lies. I’m happy the Goldman’s get the proceeds for this book. OJ should be in jail, instead he still has fans. Pathetic people who think he’s innocent. Most people know he’s guilty.

Heartbreaking

I can't imagine what the Goldman and Brown family must have felt listening to this book. How he described the crimescene 😢.
