In 2014, American private contractor Alan Gross was rotting in a Cuban prison, convicted of undermining the Havana regime. At that same time, Cuban intelligence agent Gerardo Hernández was serving two life sentences in a US federal penitentiary on charges related to espionage. Then, it all changed.

I Spy: The U.S., Cuba, and the Secret Deal That Ended the Cold War describes how secret negotiations to free the two men helped bring an end to half a century of hostilities between the United States and Cuba. Host and reporter Dan Ephron interviews agents, diplomats, negotiators, and the prisoners themselves to tell the story of the last prisoner exchange of the Cold War.

I Spy: The U.S., Cuba, and the Secret Deal That Ended the Cold War describes how the agreement reshaped the relationship between the two countries—until it didn’t.

If this was longer, I would like to see a bit more history, and more in-depth understanding of the preceeding period. However, as a brief (and currently free audible extra), this drfinately adds to my understanding of Cuba and American policy.
The personal reflections of the involved parties adds interest and the result is an interesting snipet of history.

A nice introdution to the period, and the USA policy on cuba

Was unaware of this story (despite being a young adult during the Obama admin). Was extremely well narrated by Dan and a great listen during a long drive. Well structured (narrative-wise) and well edited. Highly recommend.

Narrator voice was normal and easy to listen to. The story itself is really good too. Highly recommend.

An excellent storytelling of relations with Cuba during the Obama years. Though it is unjustifiably unfavorable to the US admin in the years prior and after. But just enough to think the author unbiased without other background info

Well organized story, but biased

Truthful explanation about how the US ruined Cuba and how it can’t let go of an old outdated grudge.

Truthful

Really Well done. Fascinating. Gave me a lot to think about. Wonder how things could possibly change for the better again.

Fascinating history I never knew.

It is distracting from the over all message when at one point in the later portion of the book a woman referees to the United States as “arguably” the most powerful country in the world . But authenticity in needed . There are multiple reasons why .

Honestly
