Publisher's summary

The Emmy Award-winning legal journalist and co-host of The View Sunny Hostin chronicles her journey from growing up in a South Bronx housing project to becoming an assistant US attorney and journalist in this powerful memoir that offers an intimate and unique look at identity, intolerance, and injustice.

“What are you?” has followed Sunny Hostin from the beginning of her story, as she grew up half Puerto Rican and half African-American raised by teenage parents in the South Bronx. Escaping poverty and the turbulence of her early life through hard work, a bit of luck and earning academic scholarships to college and law school, Sunny immersed herself in the workings of the criminal justice system.

In Washington, D.C., Sunny became a federal prosecutor, soon parlaying her wealth of knowledge of the legal system into a successful career as a legal journalist. She was one of the first national reporters to cover Trayvon Martin’s death - which her producers erroneously labeled “just a local story.”

Today, an inescapable voice from the top echelons of news and entertainment, Sunny uses her platform to advocate for social justice and give a voice to the marginalized. In her signature no-holds-barred, straight-up style, Sunny opens up and shares her intimate struggles with fertility and personal turmoil, and reflects on the high-stakes cases and stories she worked on as a prosecutor and during her time at CNN, Fox News, ABC, and The View.

Timely, poignant, and moving, I Am These Truths is the story of a woman living between two worlds, and learning to bridge them together to fight for what’s right.

Adding her story to my list of favorite memoirs.

I have watch Sunny as often as possible since she joined the view and her perspective is one of my favorites. Her book made me grow to know, understand and love her even more. I'm so glad she wrote this, its been a nice escape during this pandemic. She surprised me and I've been telling everyone to listen. So glad she spoke on behalf of her own book.

So loved this book

So loved this book. I had zero expectation... and then Sunny just snacked me into - WOW! What a story and pivotal moment. Like who would have known?!? I'm really looking at my life/moments after this great read. Who I'm NOT going to be is someone watching from the sidelines - and that definitely happened in my childhood. I'm leaning into that and working to hold and be my own truths. THANK YOU, Asuncíon. 🙏🏾 Grateful for the lessons.

loved it

I appreciate author's honesty about her journey as a mother, TV host, and a black Latino woman. I wish there were more stories about her marriage and motherhood...

Yes! Yes! Yes! A Must Read! A Must Share!

When a writer’s memoir can bring you into their story and you picture yourself right there experiencing their trials and tribs, yes, give me more. When they bring out all emotions and are also inspirational, yes, give me more. When they speak from their heart, without shame, but with the spirit, and, thus, truth, yes, give me more. Thank you, Sunny, for sharing.

Great Job

She did a wonderful job telling her story. In many instances she experiences prejudice and yet she doesn't let he get her down or stop her. It is mostly about her early life and career path. She comes across as very loving as well as loyal towards friends and family, positive, smart and confident, so one can't but help but admire her for those qualities.

I was extremely impressed with her narration, in fact if she needs an additional career to her already multiple careers she has one more talent to use for a narration career.
