Publisher's Summary

HypnoBirthing has gained momentum around the globe as a positive and empowering method of childbirth. Here's why: HypnoBirthing helps women to become empowered by developing an awareness of the instinctive birthing capability of their bodies. It greatly reduces the pain of labor and childbirth; frequently eliminates the need for drugs; reduces the need for caesarian surgery or other doctor-controlled birth interventions; and it also shortens birthing and recovery time, allowing for better and earlier bonding with the baby, which has been proven to be vital to the mother-child bond. What's more, parents report their infants sleep better and feed more easily when they haven't experienced birth trauma.

HypnoBirthing founder Marie Mongan knows from her own four births that it is not necessary for childbirth to be a terribly painful experience. In this audiobook, she shows women how the Mongan Method works and how parents can take control of the greatest and most important event of their lives.

So, why is birth such a traumatic event for so many women? And why do more than 40 percent of births now end in caesarian section, the highest percentage in history? The answer is simple: because our culture teaches women to fear birth as a painful and unsettling experience. Fear causes three physical reactions in the body - tightening of the muscles, reduced blood flow to the birthing muscles, and the release of certain hormones - which increase the pain and discomfort of childbirth. This is not hocus-pocus - this is science.

Disappointed in the structure of the book

I had such high hopes for this book. I am currently in my third trimester and have been actively seeking hypnobirthing education since mid-second trimester. Unfortunately, I live in an area where there are no current hypnobirthing educators or classes. I hoped to glean as much information from this book as I possibly could, but instead found that the book spends a disproportionate amount of time trying to sell you on the idea of hypnobirthing, instead of giving information to put this philosophy into action. As some other reviewers have said, I already bought the book. I'm already sold on the idea. There's no need to spend at least a quarter of the book trying to sell me on it.

I was also disappointed to find that with the few actual techniques the book did share, they gave only an abbreviated overview and indicated hypnobirthing educators and classes will fill in the specifics. As I mentioned before, I have no immediate access to an educator in my area, which renders much of this book useless to me.

My advice for any prospective readers: make sure you are taking a hypnobirthing class in conjunction with reading this book or at the very least, you have access to a hypnobirthing educator in your area. If neither of the aforementioned options apply to you, I would unfortunately recommend skipping this book.

Gave up after 7 chapters of no useful information

It was all storytelling and trying to sell a particular philosophy with no actual useful advice given. Maybe I would have gotten to it eventually, but I was starting to get way too annoyed with the author.

No actual information

The whole book she is trying to sell you on the idea with giving no information on techniques. I’m 38 weeks and wasted 3 days on getting through most of the book. Got through chapter 12, I believe. Definitely sells you on the idea but left you hanging on the execution.

good for info on the practice

I'm a little frustrated with this audible book. It's got lots of good info on hypnobirthing but no real way to help me DO the practice! When you buy the physical book, you get a CD with meditations on it. That's what I need. This cost the same and no meditations! Plus I can't see a table of contents and none of the chapters are labeled so I have no idea what's next or where anything in the book is. I love hypnobirthing but am very disappointed in this Audible book. At least give me the rainbow meditation!

WORST AUDIO BOOK I HAVE EVER BOUGHT!

I bought this book so I could learn about hypnobirthing, not listen to this woman’s biography. I am on chapter 4 and I feel like I’ve been held hostage listening to this woman talk about her fing career journey. NO ONE CARES! GET OVER YOURSELF! PEOPLE ARE BUYING THIS BOOK TO LEARN ABOUT HYPNOBIRTHING NOT YOU!!!!

Good concept, slow reader

wife is super into doing this for our birth. I hope it works out. The reader reads very slow on this, so I recommend playing it at 1.1x speed. It does NOT sound sped up at this speed.

Waste of time and money

I wanted to listen to this book to learn some hypnobirthing techniques which I could incorporate into my birthing plan, but unfortunately only a few techniques were discussed. Actually the first few hours of this book is purely self promotion for the author which is super unhelpful to someone trying to learn about hypobirthing. All of the evidence was purely anecdotal and no evidence was pulled from randomized controlled trials. Most of the claims made in this book have been disproven by randomized controlled trials. For instance, the book states point blank that breast-fed babies have higher IQs, so you should breast-feed your baby. I agree that breast-feeding has many benefits, but when you compare one breast-fed sibling to another formula fed sibling who share the same mom, the effects on IQ are insignificant. If you want to be lectured on how a “medication free birth” is the only path to a “normal birth” and how your “child’s soul will be affected if you receive medication”, then I would recommend this book to you.

Great book but needs to be supplemented to apply

I enjoyed the book very informative and provides a different angle.
Will need to supplement with other elements such as live instructions videos etc in order to apply.

Nice but not alone

nice book, start from chapter 13, read it with an instructor guide. otherwise it serves more a mindfullness book, not the technique itself.

Helpful! Even after already having 2 homebirths!

HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method, 4th Edition book was SO helpful to me & my husband. when In 2010, I was 26 and I had my first home birth after having watched The Business of Being Born. For some reason, I came to the conclusion that I had wanted to treat my birth as a science experiment by thinking about how the pain was measured and how to describe it to friends who didn't know what natural birth felt like. It was a terrible mistake! Little did I know, this way of thinking made me focus on the "pain" aspect and I ended up having a fearful 34-hour labor at home with Midwives. In 2012, I had my second home birth. With this labor, I remembered what *not* to do, and approached it as, yes, expecting pain, but making it more light-hearted. We focus on baking cookies during early labor and singing in mid labor. These simple behaviors made a profound difference! Not only did I experience less "pain", but my labor time was cut in half.. more than half!! It was only 12 hours from start to finish. Now, in 2020, I am 37 years old and due to have my third baby at home. This time around, I searched for something that took my mind off of what I might be expecting in terms of "pain", which after having two natural births already, I know that "pain" is actually unnecessary because I experienced two very different labors that were physiologically identical, as births and "pain" go. after having read this book, I am actually excited and completely without fear on how to birth and labor with my baby. I feel that it is almost a challenge for me to use my amazing mom super powers ;) and let my body just relax and breathe and naturally have this child come into the world. I know firsthand that your State of mind as a mother is *the most* important thing to concentrate on. Forget about the physical experience and the fearful stories you hear! And read this book so that you can become more aware of how your body and mind interact. this will make all the difference and whether you have a calm, peaceful labor and birth, or whether you end up being fearful and unable to birth naturally. You can do it! You were made to do it! And this book... whether you are doing a hospital birth, a birthing center birth, or a home birth, your mind and body will be prepared and will be on the same page when it's time to go into labor.

Find a class and skip the listen/book

This is a book that spends several chapters telling you why you should use hypnobirthing but does very little to teach you any of the techniques. If you want to try hypnobirthing, find a class and skip this book.

Ok, but better available

This book is ok. However, I’ve defo read better hypnobirthing books. Informative, yes. Sometimes don’t enough explanation and/or examples

Please note - I personally felt the woman came off strong which I also felt could jeopardise you as a mother if something didn’t go to plan. And, at the very end I personally feel was very judgemental. I plan and really hope to breast feed but my SIL can’t, she already feels terrible, I’m glad she hasn’t read this book, she’d like to feel worse

Useless- entire book is an advertisement

I bought this book hoping it would teach me some hypnobirthing techniques. It did not explain a single hypnobirthing technique, it just banged on about how great hypnobirthing is and says you should sign up to their program. such a waste of my time and money. Don't waste yours.

The best preparation for birth

Are you scared or intimidated by the idea of giving birth? Yes so was I. Until I got to read and listen to this book. everything made so much sense and resonated with me on a very deep level. I am in love with the content and the teachings of this book and the thought of giving birth. I turned my fear into pure excitement of giving birth - My body's ability of giving birth naturally. I immediately enrolled into a Hypnobirthing birth class with my partner too. I can only highly recommend this to anyone who is pregnant!!!
