helpful textbook

very informative. more information than any birthing class. did a good b job of balancing warnings and what could happen

Good information, but too open minded.

The actual information in the fifth edition is nicely updated from the fourth edition. I liked that they referenced more recent research and studies.

The effort put into political correctness was a bit distracting, but I was able to get used to it and even learned a bit. However, a line was crossed when they had an open minded position to female circumcision.

Couldn’t get past the language

I’m all for inclusivity but it’s a biological fact that women give birth. Literally every human being was birthed by a women.

Loved it

This book is a godsend. It does a great job of giving thorough, researched information without coming across as biased in any way. There are some amazing tips and tricks for parenting here and how you can be the best birth partner you can be.

Very helpful, but jarring audio issues

As a first-time father, I found this book to be very helpful in preparing for labor and delivery, especially in the late stages of pregnancy. If you do not plan to hire a doula, there is a lot of superfluous information, but the authors do a terrific job at explaining every aspect of late pregnancy to delivery to the first days postpartum in clear, understandable, inclusive language.

What is more jarring though are the sudden shifts in audio quality that pop in randomly. They do the book a disservice and make the listening experience unpleasant at times. Perhaps this was a product of the book coming out in 2020, but be forewarned if you decide to purchase this particular version. All in all, very helpful and would highly recommend to expectant partners.

Excellent book a month out from due date!

Ignore the bozos complaining about pronouns (if that upsets them, they’re not ready to handle babies). As a soon to be new dad, this was exactly the book I needed to feel ready for our new baby. I even bought a physical version to park in my hospital go bag!

Pre-flight briefing voice, wokeism galore

While the book is no doubt wonderful and very informative (I had to read it for the doula course), the 5th edition is ridiculous in it's wokeism: birthing parent (woman/mother in the previous editions), non-birthing parent (dad, husband, partner), lactating parent, breastfeeding/chestfeeding... This inclusive language makes it cumbersome to listen to and to grasp information. I'd prefer to read a more traditional previous edition but what do I know. now you have to be part of this to stay afloat.

Some decent info but a bit biased

It had some decent information but I felt like it was an advertisement for doulas.

Informative

A very informative book that I am glad I read. I will definitely encourage my husband to read it!

Really Important Information

There was so much information in this book. I’m glad I was able to listen instead if read it. The narrator did a great job. I wish she could read to my baby too. Beautiful!
