Short story

short, amateur-sleuth, law-enforcement, hurricane, murder, murder-investigation

Short stories are the most difficult to write so I was surprised when this one took a good bit of time to detail the horrors of the aftermath of a hurricane in small town Florida. The premise of the murder was interesting, and the surprise evidence really made it!
Stephanie Quinn is once again the perky voice of Hope Hadley.

Entertaining story

If you enjoy a cozy mystery now and again, Hurricanes can be Murder can fill that need. I listened to the story while hanging out in a waiting room and got a few odd looks when I giggled at several of the situations. I’m looking forward to listening to more books by Meredith Potts. Stephanie Quinn’s narration really brought the story to life.

An autopsy is performed when the police realize there was foul play and it wasn't from the storm. Hope and her detective brother are determined to find the murderer. Interesting and very entertaining.

Since I live in Florida I know about hurricanes and I could understand how Hope was feeling but then when it is all over to find out someone was murder during it would be off the charts. Hope and her brother are on the case and with a little help, they will get the villain. This quick mystery was interesting and very entertaining. I enjoyed both the eBook and the audio Stephanie Quinn did a great job as narrator. This would be a great lunch break book hope you check it out.

Short story

Overall I liked the storyline. The narrator was fine with the female voice but fell short with the male voices which I think took away from the telling of the story. Still worth listening to especially since the setting of this story is atypical from most cozy mysteries. Nice change.

Enjoyable light listen

Hope Hadley lives in Hollywood, Florida, which is getting hit by a hurricane. She and her boyfriend, along with their dogs, take refuge in a storm shelter. Hope spends a good bit of the time worrying about what they'll find when they can emerge; hurricanes, after all, can do a lot of damage.

There is indeed a lot of damage, though Hope and her boyfriend are each fortunate enough to find their homes still standing. Everything on Hope's first floor will have to go, and she'll have to have mold removers in before she can replace those things. But those are things, not people. Things are replaceable.

Then her brother Joe, a police detective in Hollywood, calls her with the news. One person has died, and not due to the storm. This woman was murdered. As is their usual habit, Joe wants his sister's help investigating the murder.

There are two suspects, the woman's brother, who stands to collect a million dollars from her insurance policy, and her ex-boyfriend, whom she had recently broken up with and who wasn't inclined to accept that. Each of them, of course, is deeply insulted to be considered a suspect, and insists the other one is far more likely.

This is a short story, and moves quickly, with good interaction between Hope and her brother, and between Hope and her boyfriend.

A good light listen.

Short with a murder mystery quickly solved

I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free audio copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

Hurricanes Can be Murder starts with Hope worried about a hurricane and then post-hurricane she couldn’t recognize her town. That brought back memories of a tornado in Joplin, Mo, where we had a store. I had to ask directions to get to my own store because there were no landmarks to guide me. It’s a strange feeling. I also understand the relief she felt that her loved ones were okay.

After the hurricane, a murdered woman was found, and Hope and her brother were working on the case. There were two main suspects and since the murder was caught on a neighbor’s video, it was a quick and easy solve.

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to about Hope Hadley, and I wasn’t sure why she was helping her brother who is a detective solve a case until I read the synopsis. If you’re looking for a super quick cozy murder mystery, this is a good one.
