The narration ruins the story.

I listen to about 70 books a year, and this is far and away the worst narration I've ever heard. The reader emphasizes every single word. She reads this book like she's reading a really boring book to a group of third graders and trying to make it exciting through the inflections in her voice. I can't even say anything about the story itself since I'm not sure if my feelings about the story are influenced by the bad narration.

Painful listen

The narration is grating. It’s all I can do to get through it. I want to finish because I want to know the outcome, although I’m pretty sure I have it pretty much figured out. The story feels painfully and unnecessarily long, but that could just be because of the overdramatic, singsongy voice. It’s awful. I’m not sure I’ll finish. The writing, too seems over the top and cringeworthy at times. The main character is hard to like.

Very enjoyable! And very different plot compared to your average mystery/thriller

Some people said the narrator was bad. Her narration didn’t bother me at all but I could see what people mean, she is fairly dramatic, almost sounds like she is reading the way you read a kids book to a little child.

Not Pekkanen’s best

Started off strong but midway I was eager for this book to end. My opinion may be skewed by the narrator, she used the tone often used for romance/light hearted fiction. I instantly hated Charlie just by the weird longing, whiny tone of voice she created for his character. Beth’s voice sounded like it was choking on her own words.
Regardless, I often tried to ignore the narrator and pretend I was reading the book but the story still fell flat. I couldn’t suspend reality enough to be believe that a family would allow a lawyer to insert herself this much into their lives without any pushback. Too much back story on the main character and it took away from the growing tension. Threw in a random love interest at the end without any lead up? Felt like that was thrown in there at the last minute. Not Pekkanen’s best work in my opinion.

Horrible narration

I’ve enjoyed other books co-written by this author but this writing was not to my liking . Too much overdone descriptions that are distracting. But I probably could have enjoyed the story if the narrator didn’t emphasize words with more urgency than necessary making it overly dramatic. Very disappointing .

A Resounding YES!!

First book by this writer I’ve “read”, but definitely not my last. Great story, loved the characters and may be my favorite narrator ever!! Highly recommend!!

Excellent Read

Narration could use a little work, but the book itself was wonderful!! I like Laura Benanti as a comedian and I enjoy her Broadway shows, but I do not feel that her tone was always correct during this book. The book is a great read.

Great storyline

I wasn’t expecting the story to include so much of the narrator’s background and was intrigued with how it was woven in with the current story. It definitely kept my interest!

this was a wonderful book, I loved every aspect. the performance, the unique story and the twists kept coming.
