Publisher's Summary

When 16-year-old Hannah Sheraton is arrested for the murder of her stepgrandfather, the chief justice of the California Supreme court, her distraught mother turns to her old college roommate, Josie Baylor-Bates, for help. Josie, once a hot-shot criminal defense attorney, left the fast track behind for a small practice in Hermosa Beach, California.

But Hannah Sheraton intrigues her and, when the girl is charged as an adult, Josie cannot turn her back. But the deeper she digs the more Josie realizes that politics, the law, and family relationships create a combustible and dangerous situation.

When the horrible truth is uncovered it can save Hannah Sheraton or destroy them both.

Narrator is horrible and law is just not credible

First, the narrator is horrible. The over dramatic tone of her voice is just too much. There are lots of things in the book that are just there for whatever reason--could have been a great segway or plot twister but the author missed the mark. As a lawyer, it drives me crazy to read or listen to a legal thriller when it is apparent the author has little to no understanding of law. Really, the legal standard in a criminal case is beyond reasonable doubt not beyond a shadow of a doubt. Too bad because the story line is good even if you could see it coming before the end of the first chapter.

Narrator sucks

I purchased the audiobook version of this book. The story is good, but I almost couldn’t concentrate on the story bc the narrator is awful. She’s overly dramatic & is a serious heavy breather, which takes away from the story. I want to listen to more stories about Josie, but I cannot handle that narrator.

Narrated for second graders...

The story was good but I had to increase the speed to get through the overly dramatic, almost whining narration...😳

Book and audio chapters don't match

The e-book and the audio chapters didn't go in the same order at the end of the book... weird. The audiobook seemed to make the most sense.

Legal and psychological thriller

I loved this book with its twists and turns. The narrator was exceptional in her deliverance of the story. I would recommend this book for mystery enthusiasts. The hostile witness was a surprise .

Terrible narration. I believe I would have enjoyed the story but the narration was so overly dramatic I could not finish.

I was up all night!

I couldn’t put it down! I’m in love with Josie Bates. I’ve been in a few legal situations and I wish she was available to represent me! Yes, I realize this is a work of fiction but I cannot help but wish the very best for Hannah’s future, Lol! I’m going to take a nap now because I spent the night reading this book.

Great story....

I loved the book. Even though I gave the performance a 5, It was difficult to listen to in such a dramatic fashion throughout the entire book. The end deserved that level of heightened drama. The beginning was too much for me and I had to shut it off several times. Once again great story!

Love or hate, still not sure

I have to admit to having not made my mind up about loving or hating this book. I didn't like any of the characters, which didn't help, I found them infuriating and frustrating. Saying that, I did find that it was gripping to the end. Fast paced and full of suspense, though a little predictable at times.

Good story but a bit long winded

Good effort and reasonable plot. I listened to the end but I find this style of narration (breathy and sentimental) a trifle annoying. That’s a personal issue; the pace and diction were great. If you enjoy courtroom drama, this is a good example.
