Acerca de esta escucha
A young man is drawn into the dark side of paradise in this haunting and "perfectly crafted" mystery (Grady Hendrix), about the eerie secrets of one Hawai’ian island—and the lengths some will go to keep them.
On a whim, Grady Kendall applies to work as a live-in caretaker for a luxury property in Hawaiʻi, as far from his small-town Maine life as he can imagine. Within days he's flying out to an estate on remote Hokuloa Road, where he quickly uncovers a dark side to the island’s idyllic reputation: it has long been a place where people vanish without a trace.
When a young woman from his flight becomes the next to disappear, Grady is determined—and soon desperate—to figure out what's happened to Jessie, and to all those staring out of the island’s “missing" posters. But working with Raina, Jessie’s fiercely protective best friend, to uncover the truth is anything but easy, and with an inexplicable and sinister presence stalking his every step, Grady can only hope he'll find the answer before it's too late.
Perfect for fans of Peter Heller and The White Lotus, and from award-winning writer Elizabeth Hand, a master of crime fiction known for her magnetic characters, seductive prose, and fearless excavations into the darkest corners of our world, comes a chilling and illuminating new novel about a place unlike any other—and the deadly cost of keeping it so.
"Set in a Hawaii so vividly imagined I'm still shaking sand out of my shoes."—Grady Hendrix
“Twisty and dark . . . easily one of the best thrillers I've read.” —Rachel Hawkins
“This is the perfect book for your summer beach bag—an evocative mystery set in a tropical island paradise . . . I was completely enthralled!” —Jason Rekulak

I’ve fallen in love with a man called Sam. And he’s perfect, just perfect. It’s a whirlwind romance. And when our dream home falls through just before our wedding, we decide to move in with his parents. He says his mother, Evelyn, is the sweetest person. But I’m not so sure. She’s obsessively protective over Sam. She wants to know where he is all the time. She wakes us up in the morning, bustling into our room like he’s a small child, not a grown man. She doesn’t want me to be alone with him.

The Gardener Estate is one of the most storied and beloved places on the West Coast: a magnificent house in vast formal grounds, home to a family that shaped California—and fought hard to conceal the turmoil and eccentricities within their walls. And now, just as the turmoil seems buried and the Estate prepares to move into a new future, construction work unearths a grim relic of the estate's history: a skull, hidden away some fifty years ago.

During intermission at the famed La Fenice opera house in Venice, Italy, a notoriously difficult and widely disliked German conductor is poisoned—and suspects abound. Guido Brunetti, a native Venetian, sets out to unravel the mystery behind the high-profile murder. To do so, he calls on his knowledge of Venice, its culture, and its dirty politics. Along the way, he finds the crime may have roots going back decades—and that revenge, corruption, and even Italian cuisine may play a role.

On the edge of the Northern Atlantic lies a remote island. The islanders are an outwardly harmonious community—but all have their own secrets, some much darker than others. And when a strange disorder begins to infect them all, those secrets come to light. Ferry service fails and contact with the mainland is lost. Rumors begin to swirl as a temporary inconvenience grows into nightmarish ordeal. The fabric of the once tight-knit island is unnervingly torn apart—and whatever the cause, the question soon stops being how or why it happened, but who, if anyone, will survive.

An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Historia
Laboring under a shared loss, Doug and his young son, Tim, set out on a late season backpacking trip through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. They find beauty and solidarity in the outdoors, making friends along the trail and falling into the rhythms of an expedition. But when reports of warfare and social collapse reach the ranger station, Doug—seeking to protect the only family he has left—withdraws even further into the backcountry.

Beautiful novel!
I didn’t know what to expect, but I couldn’t stop listening. The story was compelling!

Amazing story perfectly performed
This was a delightful book of mystery, legends and characters you fall in love with. The performance was phenomenal. You won’t regret this audible book

“There’s something happening here…”
….what it is ain’t exactly clear”. The story is weird. There are some spooky parts but the plot drags. Very disappointing. But good narration.

Good Story, Terrible Dialog
The story was good - somewhat suspenseful, kept you guessing a little, and generally good. The downfall is the dialog between characters. Not at all natural and just simply terrible. The narration was excellent and really contributed heavily to me finishing the book. I got this book on sale - but would have returned it if I had spent a whole credit...

A listener born in Hawaii
I moved from Maui to PA at the age of three. My “Hawaiian-Portagee” mother had an accent and spoke in the vernacular— how I enjoyed Kaleo Griffith’s performance— some good yeah?! Enjoy this Audiobook.

Good premise and reader. Resolution lacking something.
I enjoyed the atmosphere and characters of the book. I also enjoyed the final scenes, However, the confrontation seemed a little weak.

Great imagery
I loved listening to this novel. It held my interest and the reader did a wonderful job with expression.

Hawaiian Gothic
After a slow start, in which I almost abandoned the audio book, the narrative picked up, although I can't say I was ever enthralled by it.
The best part of the book to me is the portrayal of a dark Hawaiian island, full of homeless and poverty, where even the nature has an overpowering sense of decay and corruption.
The main character is, by choice, very bland and not all that likeable.

Fantastic narrator!
The story was a little fantastical for me, but I so appreciate the narrator! Unlike other narrators of audible books set in Hawaii, Kaleo knows how to pronounce Hawaiian words and uses the correct inflection when speaking. Mahalo!!!
