Publisher's summary

The most anticipated spy thriller of 2020, from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Corpus.

Autumn 1941. The war is going badly for Britain and its allies. If Hitler is to be stopped, a new weapon is desperately needed.

In Cambridge, professor Tom Wilde is approached by an American intelligence officer who claims to know of such a weapon - one so secret even Hitler himself isn't aware of its existence. If Wilde can smuggle the package out of Germany, the Third Reich will surely fall.

But it is only when he is deep behind enemy lines that Wilde discovers why the Nazis are so desperate to prevent the 'package' falling into Allied hands. And as ruthless killers hunt him through Europe, a treacherous question hangs over the mission: if Hitler's secret will win them the war, why is Wilde convinced it must remain hidden?

Dramatic, intelligent and utterly compelling, Hitler's Secret is the breakout spy thriller of the year from the award-winning author of Corpus and Nucleus - perfect for listeners of Robert Harris, C J Sansom and Joseph Kanon.

Loved Hitler’s Secret

This 4th installment is the best of the lot. I look forward to more. And, of course, more John Shakespeare stories ❤️

A wonderful book!

This is outstanding historical spy fiction. One of my favorites and I read and listen a lot to both genres—historical and espionage fiction. It is so very welcome in our cynical age to read about principled characters who do principled deeds. This book’s premise is very interesting and the author delivers on it. Excellent narration as well. This book will not disappoint. On to finding other books by this author!

Excellent well-written soul-wrenching depiction

of the savage evil Hitler wrought from 1933 to 1945. How agonizing it is indeed to be faced with the fact that the grotesque ignorant antiSemite racist social and political underbelly Trump has unleashed demonstrates that we have not learned the Most Important moral lessons from the horrors of WWII.

Great reading, excellent data

Enjoyed listening this book very much! Only thing I would recommend is to more clearly group events and divide them into chapters. Often the reading would go from acute event with Clara to let’s completely different moment which seemed to be in the same paragraph. If the listener was not paying a great attention, would be very easy to get lost in the story.

Lost me in Sweden

The author should have ended it in Sweden. As if the Germans would run in an e boat into the UK and sacrifice equipment and men by order of a civilian. The remainder is ridicules and the dialogue is painful. The narrator is very good on a positive note.

Enjoyed it

It's been awhile since I've read a historic fiction that took me to that time so effortlessly but also had a white knuckle plot that held me. Having been born in 1941 the war is still alive to me and this book just felt right. Recommend it highly.

Many Will Die To Keep It.

Anyone who enjoys espionage novels and thrillers will appreciate this. Those who are well read on 20th century history and World War 2 will find even more to take away from this well constructed and plotted book.
I stumbled across HITLER’S SECRET, which is the fourth in the Tom Wilde series, and am delighted I read this, rather than waiting until I had read number one, CORPUS.
It is early in the war with Germany and Tom Wilde, a Cambridge professor, is recruited to travel to Europe to secure a secret “package” and bring it back to England. Not even Hitler knows of it, but if Britain can secure it, the tide of the war, which is going badly, could be turned.
Once he has achieved his objective the real challenge begins for Wilde as he endeavours to stay ahead of the Nazis, who will eliminate anyone who knows the truth. Even when he is back on English soil, because of other agendas and the evil antagonist closing in, it still may disappear into the wisps of an English fog.
This is lean writing at its best, depicting the “worst of times”, the men and women who perpetrated the horrors and those who stood against them. The characterization is excellent, the plotting complex with many credible twists, a powerful climax and a satisfying denouement, just the meal admirers of Robert Harris, Joseph Kanon, Alex Gerlis and Frederick Forsyth will be pleased to enjoy.
Adam Sims is a fine narrator, capturing the class differences in Britain and the differing accents across Europe.
Highly recommended. Happy reading, Eric.

Series gets better

I’m actually enjoying these more as I go along. There’s always an issue for me with thrillers like this where the protagonist is supposed to be someone outside the military or espionage world. The hero is a lecturer who also can fight, shoot, row a boat in high seas and outwit the intelligence services of two countries. My lecturers at university could barely keep us in lectures and out of the pub! Once you get over that and just enjoy the books they’re great. Intelligent, twisty and an interestingly different take on a massively over-exploited period.

Another thrilling masterpiece

What a great book. The story kept me 'hanging' until the very end. Exciting, historical of the times, well researched and very well written. I cannot recommend this book more highly. The narrative voice is well chosen and easy on the ear. I can only give this 5 stars, wish there were more I could rate it.

What a disappointment.

I throughly enjoyed the earlier books. I found this unbelievable and too far fetched. Got so irritated I was unable to finish it.

Exciting wartime thriller

Held my attention all the way. I loved the pace of this novel. It never lingered unnecessarily. The events were gripping and the author has created a plot with a new premise, at least to me.
I liked the characters involved and the villainous agent Charlie Jung stands out. I hope he gets another outing. He is a great foil to Tom Wilde, the good agent.
The narration is spot on too. Great accents, American, British, German. All convincing and never intruding on the book.
I will find the other books by this author and hope they are narrated by Adam Sims.

Claptrap

If you like Dan Brown books then this may be for you.

Otherwise avoid.

One dimensional characters, terrible dialogue and unbelievable plot. I ceased to care long before the end.

Magnificent listening

This is one book I have been fascinated in for some time and finally I got around to listening to it at the end I asked myself why? why did I take so long why didn't I listen to it earlier
The storyline is brilliant the characters majestic and the locations with beautifully described scenery simply awesome I simply got hooked into it from the off a fantastic beginning I had my own visions of the people involved and the locations .
The narrator was terrific very precise with his description of scenes characters and description of events as they unfolded
This is the first time I have live listened to a book by the author and have to openly state it will not be my last
I had no problems in giving this book a 5 star review it will probably be the my last listen of the year and I can say comfortably a great way to end 2020 I have both read and listened to a lot of books this year and this easily makes my top 5
so if my review helps you to try reading/listening to this book then I hope you enjoy it as much as me as I said earlier I simply couldn't get enough of it then enjoy it it. is simply magnificent

Five stars are not enough.

Really enjoyed this book from start to finish. A chilling portrayal of a previous time under a despicable fascist regime that caused the deaths of millions of people. The story quickly moves along between people and places, where a mistake or chance encounter may finish the main characters. Travel back Into dark history when hopes and bravery prevailed over evil.

Disappointing (Audible)

Storyline improbable and lacked any pace. Impossible to develop any simpathy for the good guys and the baddies were formulaic. Even Charlie Young lacked real menace despite his brutality. I got to the end without any real satisfaction or enjoyment

Excellent narration, fascinating history, strong female characters.

If you are interested in WW2, this book won't disappoint. The main character Thomas Wilde appears to have super human strength and abilities to escape death over and over but don't let this slightly improbable feature of these books spoil your enjoyment. I particularly like Clements' use of strong female characters. The narrator is excellent- one of the few male performers of audiobooks who does a convincing female voice.
