Publisher's Summary

Lucky...or blessed?

The history of the United States displays an uncanny pattern: At moments of crisis, when the odds against success seem overwhelming and disaster looks imminent, fate intervenes to provide deliverance and progress. Historians may categorize these incidents as happy accidents, callous crimes, or the products of brilliant leadership, but the most notable leaders of the past 400 years have identified this good fortune as something else - a reflection of divine providence.

In The American Miracle, best-selling author and radio host Michael Medved recounts some of the most significant events in America's rise to prosperity and power, from the writing of the Constitution to the Civil War. He reveals a record of improbabilities and amazements that demonstrate what the Founders always believed: that events unfolded according to a master plan, with destiny playing an unmistakable role in lifting the nation to greatness.

Among the stirring, illogical episodes described here:

  • A band of desperate religious refugees find themselves blown hopelessly off course, only to be deposited at the one spot on a wild continent best suited for their survival
  • George Washington's beaten army, surrounded by a ruthless foe and on the verge of annihilation, manages an impossible escape due to a freakish change in the weather
  • A famous conqueror known for seizing territory, frustrated by a slave rebellion and a frozen harbor, impulsively hands Thomas Jefferson a tract of land that doubles the size of the United States
  • A weary soldier picks up three cigars left behind in an open field and notices the stogies have been wrapped in a handwritten description of the enemy's secret battle plans - a revelation that gives Lincoln the supernatural sign he's awaited in order to free the slaves

When millions worry over the nation losing its way, Medved's sweeping narrative, bursting with dramatic events and lively portraits of unforgettable, occasionally little-known characters, affirms America as "fortune's favorite", shaped by a distinctive destiny from our beginnings to the present day.

What the Critics Say

"Absolutely spectacular. This book is must-reading for anyone not yet fully convinced that God's hand has been on America from the very beginning. The stories in it are genuinely staggering, fascinating, eye-opening, and deeply inspiring. Please do yourself a favor and read this book!" (Eric Metaxas, New York Times best-selling author of Bonhoeffer and If You Can Keep It)

"Whether it was God or the gods, some crucial moments in American history have turned on providential events that defy rational explanation. Medved has a keen eye for such semi-supernatural stories, and tells them with his customary clarity." (Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner; author of Founding Brothers)

"Michael Medved does a beautiful job of piecing together the most providential parts of our history - from the story of 'indestructible' George Washington to 'the miracle of Lincoln.' And I can't help but agree with his argument: To believe America is exceptional is simply to be grateful for what God has given us." (Paul Ryan, speaker of the US House of Representatives)

    "great book"

I've never listened to Mike's radio program. This book is exceptional! The stories are terrific and they make you reflect on God's Providence they may be happening all around us. Unfortunately, we only come to realize well after the fact.

    "Amazing Book"

I'm not done with listening to this book but I felt compelled to review it. Medved has put together a very compelling case for the fact that God has indeed "Shed his Grace on Thee". Lots of historical information that I, as a history buff, had never known or considered before. The only caveat is that Medved reads it a bit slow. I had to crank it up to 1.25 speed. After that it was perfect. Otherwise it was one of the best author read books I've listened to.

    "loved this book!"

Amazing stories of true miracles! Love God? Love America? This read is for you! I learned important history of our country that has been hidden or hard to find like the story of Nicholas Trist, the gold rush and California becoming part of the United States. This book is a treasure!

    "A bit of a surprise"

I am interested in history of America and other. That is why this book had initially caught my eye. I had not expected American exceptionalism. I did did learn some new aspects of our history, but I have trouble with the authors purpose to in part, or entirely conclude that America is exceptional to the point of being God's chosen Nation. This aspect IS new to me. While I believe we can and should learn from history in order to remind us of our Humanity and therefore hopefully guide us in the present/future, I think it's a stretch to claim that we are exceptional over others in God's eye. I am extremely grateful to be the benefactor the American experiment, but might suggest that it is the planet Earth that is more God's intended experiment. With the Advent of the internet and other technology improvements we are now more "global" than ever in the past. This could be part of God's purpose and challenge for us today, that while continuing to remain true to our principals, we somehow learn how to be open and inclusive to as many as possible. We have every right to be proud of our past and who we as a nation are today, but exceptional under God's eye over others ... not sure ... food for some thought.

    "I am Michael Medved"
Where does The American Miracle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    At the top!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The American Miracle?

He peeled back the onion on our culture and nailed it.

Have you listened to any of Michael Medved’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

All of it..his accuracy was spot on.

    Any additional comments?

I could have wrote this book. His family is my family. I, like him, was the one that broke out. Like Mike, when I started taking action to better myself, I was simultaneously creating enemies without knowing it. They didn't want me to break free, they wanted me to live in the misery of the culture. Through the love of my wife and then my children, I became something different--something better; and raised my family much differently. I am older than Mke, 51, so my kids are grown now. But my daughter is a Pharmacist and my son is in Med-School at Duke. Since the 1800s my family has been blue color, poor, uneducated, and now from me onward my family is poised to give back to society and not take from it any longer. His life was exactly my life. My papaw was just like his. My Daddy was just like his. My siblings were exactly like his. Great book. Spot on.

"Interesting content but author should not read."

Book has some interesting content and does a fine job of outlining points in history where you would conclude that there are too many coincidences in the development of our nation to ignore the hand of providence. That being said, the author's reading of the book makes it difficult to complete. Very monotone and somewhat loftily read.
