Narration was horrible (not his fault)

It was really hard for me a spanish speaking Cuban American to follow all the names of places and people. The narrator needed to be a fluent Spanish speaker. This guy butcher all the names.

Rich and informative

My grandfather was born in Havana and came to the US in the 1940s. I didn’t know much about Cuba or Havana’s history and this book fills a void.

Wonderful book about Cuba History

This was a good overview of Cuba's history. It does have its bias as it mentions few of the benefits brought about the revolution.

Places the history of Cuba within the framework of world events and how those events and political currents affected Cuba. A good book.

Loved the book

It's a complicated history of colonialism, capitalism, socialism and a true social experiment. This helped me see many perspectives in a well-written, never boring, almost conversational way. It's satisfying and enjoyable.

This book gives an overall picture of Cuba

Good book for looking into primary sources in Cuban history. Sometimes it came up short on exactly what I was looking for, but, overall, it has a good number of sources.

How the Mob helped Castro's rise to power

This is a book that pulls together all the missing pieces from the history of Cuba taught in US schools. From that time on I was infatuated with Cuba. I would love to see this on a supplemental reading list whenever the history of Cuba and Castro is taught. History is never clear as black and white.

To the point

I think it will give the information more substance. It will explain how Castro was so successful in overthrowing the corrupt government, ousting the mob, and most of all, why the people of Cuba back him and he is still their hero.

I am really so satisfied by getting this book

A lot of detail is given to the main characters of the story, and very little given to the condition of the people that were the deciding factor in the ending of this part of Cuba's history, the peasants.

deeper than average

A fascinating history of the city. The author does a fantastic job of telling facts without editorializing. It also helps that he has a lot of experience in the city, and loves it.

A fascinating look into the phenomenon

It is a delightful, easily accessible history audiobook that I would recommend to anyone with an interest in Havana. FYI: the focus is history on the city of Havana, the book almost never strays beyond the city to other parts of Cuba.

A very good, informative portrait of Havana

I especially appreciated how the author blended history with references to Cuban literature. His treatment of slavery and race in Cuba was informative and compelling. I have suffered from subtropical delirium for many years, and Captivating History's this book only increased my fever for the elegant, tattered city of Havana.

A good introduction to past cuba

This is an excellent AUDIOBOOK to provide a significant amount of color to the rich tapestry of this wonderfully tragic country. GREAT style weaving in history and observations in an entertaining way. It's not a travel guide but a cultural guide.
