Publisher's Summary

An unexpected fortune falls into a tradeswoman’s lap, a gentleman insists it rightfully belongs to him, will falling in love make matters better or worse?

A third son to an earl, Adam Gillensford knows his only hope of an inheritance is through his great uncle. But when the Will is read, Adam learns most of the wealth has been left to a complete stranger, and a seamstress at that. If he hopes to salvage any kind of funds for himself, he has two choices: adhere to his late uncle’s wishes and assist the new heiress in finding her way, or sabotage her so the courts will find her unfit to inherit. Deciding his course would be easier if the heiress wasn’t so enchanting.

Elaine Chapple, a woman in trade, is rather used to being seen as unusual. But running her own dress shop is far different from discovering a man she barely knew left his entire estate in her care. As unexpected as the fortune is, the help of the gentleman attached to it is even more perplexing. Does Mr. Gillensford mean to make her a success, or a fool?

With a greedy family urging Adam to act for his own good, and Elaine’s difficulty in adapting to her new life, only love could possibly untangle this mess.

Well-written

I have a problem with Sally Britton’s books. I never finish. Not because the books are bad, but because they are so well-done. I can only listen to a few chapters before I feel inspired to try writing myself.

Now, it would be simple to enjoy these books as a reader. The narrator is very talented. I loved her varied voices and different accents for each character. The books are sweet, funny, have happy endings, great characters, etc. I am sure you will find many reviews that elaborate on the entertainment value of this novel. In short, there is a reason these books sell so well.

But they have a second utility. They are great for the many writers of this type of fiction to study. I get caught up in noting examples of things she has done really well and highlighting lessons I need to try to implement myself. She does a fantastic job of weaving the description of the scenery into her narrative. There are these adorable little witticisms sprinkled into her writing. Like the way she explained that as a red-head, the main character was cursed to flush (you will hear the actual line and get my meaning in the first chapter). There are several books on writing that suggest one must use the first chapter to make the main character likable. In a story like this one, where a character is immediately blessed with incredible good fortune, this is element is extra important. In this first chapter, she provides no less than five solid examples of over the top charitable acts the heroine has performed, but does so in such a natural manner, the reader doesn’t feel like they are being manipulated with a heavy handed approach. Instead, they simply ends up caring about her characters. Her word choice is varied and interesting. Her pacing is perfect.

It is one thing to read books on writing. It is educational and helpful. But reading Sally’s books is like seeing those lessons in practice. They say if you want to improve your own writing, you must read great writers. The books on writing are like a desk manual for the job. Reading novels that practice the skills discussed in these how-to books is more like on-the-job training. On my to-do list is to sit down with each of Sally’s books and read them all straight through. There is a lot to be learned from her technique. She is truly talented. I really appreciate receiving a free copy of this audio book. Maybe without the printed text in front of me, I can at last enjoy the tale instead of getting caught up in fan-girling over the technique.

Fun twist

What a fun story. I love the thought of a seamstress becoming owner of an estate and how the real people around her recognize her goodness. As always, the main characters seem unable to converse, but make it in the end. But the end has a lovely twist!!

Very Well Written

Being the third son to an Earl, Adam knows that his only hope to inherit will be when his great uncle dies. When his uncle's will is read, Adam and his family are shocked to learn that his uncle has left his home and money to an unknown seamstress. Adam will inherit his uncle's investments only after he has given aid to the seamstress for one year.

Elaine is a talented seamstress who is kind to everyone and has taken in two children. Knowing it is unlikely that anyone would be interested in an unmarried woman who is raising two children, she has resigned herself to remaining single. She is shocked to learn that a small act of kindness to a stranger has left her very well off.

Adam and Elaine are quickly drawn to each other but will a misunderstanding tear them apart?

This is my first exposure to Sally Britton and I truly loved this book. The story is very well written and the characters were well developed. Narrator Jessica Elisa Boyd did an outstanding performance. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

Clean romance

This book was darling. I couldn’t wait till the kids left for school so I could get back to it. The whole idea of the inheritance was so unique- I loved it. It had a happy ending which I love and lots of relatable dialogue. I would recommend this for sure.

Love improves us

This is a sweet love story of Adam and Elaine. Adam who was first jealous of Elaine, a seamstress who inherits his great Uncle’s estate when he thought it was coming to him. Adam finds that he can’t dislike the quiet but kind woman. Finding love from a place he thought couldn’t exist. But proving himself worthy of Elaine may be a bigger challenge. Such sweet characters. Loved it. This whole series is super fun. The narrator does a fantastic on as well.

His Unexpected Heiress 5 Stars

A delightful twist on the expected rules of inheritance during a rather particular period. Elaine has a sweet, brave heart and willingly cares for others. She is used to working hard and doing things that may be seen as a bit unconventional. Accepting a large inheritance from a man she barely knew draws her into a new life that she has knowledge of, but not the experience or connections to succeed. Until Adam volunteers his time and expertise. Adam helps her navigate this new status and acclimate to the people and responsibilities a position of wealth requires. Along the way they build a friendship that seems sure, until Adam’s secret comes to light. I love the way their friendship slowly builds into more and culminates with them learning how to trust one another. If you enjoy clean, sweet regency romances, then this book is for you.

Loved!

Loved this book! This is the second book in a series, but you don't have to read the first for this to make sense. I absolutely loved the characters and I enjoyed how their relationship grew. I always like a story where one of the main characters goes through a change of heart. I also liked how the secret issue was handled. I don't typically like when the conflict is about a secret that is kept, but I thought this was done well! Highly recommend to anyone who likes Regency romances.

Great Regency romance

The person reading the book had good inflection throughout. The romance was sweet and not rushed. I enjoy Sally's books because the focus is on the growth of the h & H and development of the romance. The story was unique. I appreciate the whole story being kept within the period it was set in. If you enjoy Sarah eden then Sally Britton is a good bet.

Another fantastic story by Britton!

Another fantastic story by Sally Britton. Each step of the storyline had me enthralled and just wanting more and the narration was brilliant! Each time I’ve listened to an audiobook narrated by Jessica Elisa Boyd, I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
This story is part of a series and collaboration with other authors, so whilst it can be read or listened to as a stand-alone, I highly recommend checking out the others in the series. One feature of this series that I really enjoyed is the solicitor - who is the same for all of the books throughout the series. I find him more endearing with each encounter.
